Ganley courts far right anti Semitic radio in Poland

Ganley recently did a secret deal with a Polish bishop in an attempt to get the support of Radio Maryja. Do we really want religion in politics? Should priests have the influence they had when Ireland was a sea of clerical sex abuse? i don't think so. faith is a private matter and should be kept out of political decisions.

As the Fenian Charles Kickham urged in the Irish People newspaper in 1864 in an article "Priests In Politics", priests should stay away from politics and stick to ministering for the spiritual well being of their flocks. They have no place at the centre of a republic's political life. Vote no to Ganley and his secret deals with the far right religious.

Polish Right-Wing Radio Station to Get EU Money

Radio Maryja, a right-wing broadcaster founded by an ultra-conservative Catholic priest, is in line to get €15 million in European Union funding. The money would go to expand a journalism school for the station, which has been accused of anti-Semitism.

A right-wing Polish radio station founded by an ultra-conservative Polish Catholic priest is in line to get European Union funding.

Radio Maryja, which has been accused of being anti-Semitic and anti-EU, may receive more than €15 million in EU funding for a private university, Poland's Minister of Regional Development Grazyna Gesicka said Tuesday. The project has fulfilled all the necessary criteria and will get the EU grant, Gesicka said.

Her statement confirmed an earlier report in the Tuesday edition of the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza that the school was on a list of 350 projects that Warsaw has recommended to receive EU funding. The money will go to expand Radio Maryja's journalism school, the Torun-based Higher School of Social and Media Culture.

However the European Commission disputed that the funds had been approved. Commission spokeswoman Katharina von Schnurbein told the news agency AFP that the EU's strict ban on discrimination must be adhered to if Radio Maryja was going to get EU money. "We have clear criteria and values," she said. According to sources in the EU quoted by AFP, Radio Maryja's radical stance would reduce its chances of getting funding.

A spokeswoman for the European Commission told the news Web site EU Observer that the commission could use anti-discrimination rules "to stop the project if necessary."

Radio Maryja was founded by the controversial Catholic priest Tadeusz Rydzyk, who was caught on tape earlier this year making anti-Semitic remarks which were then published in the Polish weekly Wprost. According to the magazine, Rydzyk accused Polish President Lech Kaczynski of being "in the pockets of the Jewish lobbies," and said that if you give them aid, "they will come to you and say 'give me your coat. Take off your pants. Give me your shoes.'" He also referred to Kaczynski's wife as a "witch" for her support of abortion rights.

Rydzyk's recent meeting with Pope Benedict XVI was condemned by international Jewish groups. He has close links to the Kaczynski twins, who are prime minister and president of Poland, and the support of Radio Maryja is thought to have been instrumental in getting the Kaczynskis' Law and Justice party elected in 2005.

Declan Ganley has been flying helicopters to bishops houses to hold secret meetings in order to win this crucial support. He is said to have met with Bishop Antonii Dydycz in the past fortnight.

Ganley promised three things to the bishop:
1/ to be absolutely loyal,
2/ to be open to all people indicated by Father Rydzyk and
3 to keep Roman Giertych in the background.

Roman Giertych is a leading LPF member and Ganley ally, so much for loyalty. Roman Giertych is also a competitor with Bender for the extreme right support Ganley has courted.
Since this deal was done it also emerged that Libertas in Ireland were anti Polish and want to close Irish borders to Polish workers and their families.

Declan Ganley will do everything to make Libartas take over the position of Jarosław Kaczyński’s party at Radio Maryja. With this in mind he met in secret with Bishop Antonii Dydycz of Drohiczyn two weeks ago. Bp Dydycz is so influential that he is often called Ober-Rydzyk. As “Wprost” has learnt, Ganley swore his utter loyalty to Bp. Dydycz. He also promised to open to all people indicated by Father Rydzyk and to keep Roman Giertych in the background. He only wants one thing in return: the support of his Toruń media.


The stakes are very high. Radio Maryja’s listeners constitute a very disciplined electorate, which votes in all elections. According to the bravest estimates, around one million people take Father Tadeusz Rydzyk’s opinions to heart. "It means that the support of Radio Maryja suffices to cross the mystical electoral threshold of 5 percent. In other words, without Father Rydzyk we cannot even dream of the European Parliament," said one of Ganley’s associates from Poland to “Wprost”.

Until now there has been no sign that Toruń would give its support to the party of the Irish millionaire. On the contrary, during this campaign Father Rydzyk has repeatedly declared his support for PiS. He has said several times on the radio that one should not vote for Libertas, because this is not a Polish party. "In traditionalistic circles it is a very serious accusation. All those politicians who agreed to cooperate with Ganley have been cursed by Toruń," said a politician related to the Redemptorists. It is also worth noting that one of PiS Senators from the circle of Radio Maryja, Ryszard Bender met with Father Tadeusz Rydzyk in Toruń at the end of April at the 13th Forum of the Polish Diaspora, which was organised by Radio Maryja. “Rydzyk couldn’t rid himself of him. Whenever Bender mentioned Libertas, Father Tadeusz started to wave his hands and said “Leave me alone and forget about this Libertas,” relates one of witnesses.

However Ganley does everything to detach PiS from Radio Maryja. He managed to undermine their relations. "Wprost" discovered that the Irishman met in secret with Bp Antonii Dydycz of Drohiczyn, who is the most important of all hierarchs related to Radio Maryja. “He is the only person that Father Tadeusz listens to. He is like Ober-Rydzyk,” described him one of right-wing politicians. It is the more significant that until now Bp Dydycz has been the main advocate of the alliance between Toruń and PiS. According to our sources an hour-long meeting between Dydycz and Ganley, which was organised by Senator Ryszard Bender, took place two weeks ago in Drohiczyn. “Ganley made a huge impression over there. After the talks he boarded his helicopter, which was parked outside the Curia, and flew to Warsaw,” relates a person who knows the details of the story. “It’s true that such a meeting took place, but I cannot reveal any details,” added Bender.

"Wprost" has learnt however, that Ganley promised three things to the bishop: to be absolutely loyal, to open to all people indicated by Father Rydzyk and to keep Roman Giertych in the background. He only asked for one thing in return: the support of the media from Toruń.

Will he succeed? Will Radio Maryja support Ganley’s party in the elections to the European Parliament? "It would be good if there was a bond between Libertas and the broadcaster. Mr. Ganley is a very well-mannered and religious person, who cares for Poland," replied Bender.

Stawka jest ogromna. Słuchacze Radia Maryja to najbardziej zdyscyplinowany elektorat, który bierze udział we wszystkich wyborach. Według najodważniejszych szacunków, osób liczących się z głosem o. Tadeusza Rydzyka może być nawet ok. miliona. – Oznacza to, że poparcie Radia Maryja wystarcza do przekroczenia magicznego progu pięciu procent. Na antenie radia kilkukrotnie mówił też, że nie należy głosować na Libertas, bo to partia niepolska. – W tradycjonalistycznym środowisku to bardzo ciężki zarzut. Politycy, którzy poszli na współpracę z Ganleyem, zostali wyklęci przez Toruń – mówi jeden z polityków związanych z redemptorystami. Znamienne były też scenki z udziałem radiomaryjnego senatora PiS Ryszarda Bendera i Tadeusza Rydzyka, którzy spotkali się w Torunie pod koniec kwietnia na XIII Forum Polonijnym organizowanym przez Radio Maryja. - Rydzyk odpędzał się od niego jak od muchy. Gdy tylko Bender wspominał o Libertas, ojciec Tadeusz zaczynał machać rękami i mówił „a daj pan spokój z tym Libertasem" – relacjonuje uczestnik imprezy.
Ganley robi jednak wszystko, by odspawać PiS od Radia Maryja. Udało mu się zrobić już nawet bardzo ważny wyłom w dotychczasowych relacjach z Toruniem. Z ustaleń „Wprost" wynika, że Irlandczyk został potajemnie przyjęty przez bp. drohiczyńskiego Antoniego Dydycza, najważniejszego z radiomaryjnych hierarchów. – To, jedyna osoba, której ojciec Tadeusz słucha. To ktoś w rodzaju Ober-Rydzyka – charakteryzuje go jeden z prawicowych polityków. To spotkanie jest tym bardziej znaczące, że bp. Dydycz był do tej pory głównym orędowników sojuszu Torunia z PiS. Według informacji „Wprost", do godzinnej rozmowy Dydycz-Ganley, którą zorganizował senator Ryszard Bender, doszło dwa tygodnie temu w Drohiczynie. – Ganley zrobił tam wielkie wrażenie. Po rozmowie wsiadł do śmigłowca zaparkowanego przed kurią i odleciał do Warszawy – opowiada osoba znająca kulisy spotkania. – Rzeczywiście, takie spotkanie miało miejsce, ale nie mogę zdradzać żadnych szczegółów – dopowiada Bender.
Z ustaleń „Wprost" wynika jednak, że Ganley zadeklarował biskupowi trzy rzeczy: pełną lojalność, całkowite otwarcie na osoby wskazane przez o. Rydzyka i utrzymanie w cieniu Romana Giertycha. W zamian poprosił tylko o jedno: o poparcia toruńskich mediów.
Czy osiągnie swój cel? Czy Radio Maryja poprze partię Ganleya w wyborach do Parlamentu Europejskiego? – Dobrze by było, gdyby wytworzyła się więź między Libertas a rozgłośnią. Pan Ganley to bardzo kulturalny i religijny człowiek, któremu zależy na sprawach Polski - odpowiada Bender.
