Declan Ganley's political legacy is likely to be lawsuits from the various national parties who claim that he has not handed over the cash he promised

A sad and a grubby tale of Declan Ganley's Libertas party is beginning to emerge. one where people have lost their jobs to support Libertas and invested thousands of Euros of their own funds into the party only to find that the promised funding from Declan Ganley HAS NOT emerged and their fear is that it will not emerge.

Readers of this blog will not be surprised that the Libertas political movement has joined other Ganley failures like the Anglo Adriatic Investment Fund. However given the level of hype and rhetoric from Ganley and his followers it is a remarkable twist that the Spanish Libertas list and the Dutch list are now out of pocket. Reports are emerging from Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant that there will be a lawsuit by the Spanish, French, and Portuguese Libertas and they are inviting the Dutch branch to join them.

Eline van de Broek, the torture supporting candidate for Dutch Libertas , has stated that she was on the phone to Ganley's wife at 1.30 am some mornings trying to get the money Declan Ganley had promised her. However, Ganley when he came home was "too tired to talk to her". He also promised her repeatedly that "the money would come tomorrow".

It would appear that the "self made man" thought he could pull of an electoral deception based on mobilising people across Europe on promises of funding which have not materialised in many cases.


Ironically Phillipe De Villiers in an email to this blogger yesterday has returned to using the Le Mouvement Pour la France rather than his Libertas name.

It has been reported to this blogger that in recent weeks Jens Peter Bonde appeared to pull away from Libertas stating privately that Declan Ganley was not listening to him.

Protest far right Libertas/MPF media exposure in France

MPF Libertas candidates will be appearing on the on the following French radio sations and TV channels in the coming weeks. Please protest the media promoting a party with links to holocaust deniers, racists, fascists across Europe. Protest a party led by Declan ganley a US military supplier getting coverage on French radio and TV. Phone the shows, email the owners, complain about the MPF/Libertas getting airtime.

Libertas personal unhappy and leaving as "Libertas attracts too many right wingers and religious fundamentalists."

Over the last few months I have kept up correspondence and received great deals of information from people inside the Libertas groupings both in Ireland and throughout Europe. I have fully appreciated the idealism and hope that many of my correspondents have expressed and i have often taken their concerns on board when ameliorating the blog contents as they were not the architects of the Libertas scam.
Below is an email I received yesterday

Hi People,

just to let you know that after thoroughly observing Libertas I am no longer with them. The final blow: in Germany they have teamed up with a "Christian" party, which is just ridiculous.

There are some good people in Libertas, and I still agree with the goal of making Europe more democratic, but obviously Libertas attracts too many right wingers and religious fundamentalists.

I still think the wording of your blog is not adequate. They are surely not Nazis and it makes your blog much less credible and convincing.

I am aware that many people involved with Libertas are not Nazis but many are. I also receive emails from people who say of Le Mouvement Pour la France, aka Libertas France

MPF is also full of racists, even they hide it and have mock internal
rules against xenophobia.

So what can we do ? keep on keeping on.
Stop Libertas now before it is too late.

If Libertas are not a far right party what are France's far right Front Nationale worried about?
Will ganley tell us that they are only far right in France. This little tussle will play get nasty as the campaigns get under way.

Last weekend the French far right party Front Nationale launched its drive for the European elections in June. Jean-Marie Le Pen the party's 82 year leader criticised other far right leaders including Phillipe de Villiers of the Mouvement Pour la France, who made an election pact with Declan Ganley and Libertas.
As predicted on this blog, the Front Nationale see Libertas as one of the threats to their far right voting base and is bringing Ganley's American connections to the fore. Indeed Le Pen labelling Declan Ganley as "a locomotive millionaire suspected to be an American official".

If Libertas is not a far right party why are the far right so interested in their voting potential?

The FN is not alone in the family of French nationalist eurosceptics. Nicolas Dupont-Aignan heads the movement Debout la République , while Philippe de Villiers and Frédéric Nihous are now allies under the banner of Libertas, the party which successfully led the campaign against the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland (EurActiv 11/03/09). Moreover, the Parti de la France , founded by Carl Lang, a former member of the FN, will present candidates in at least two districts.

In fact, some arguments put forward on Sunday by Le Pen are very similar to those presented by the Movement pour la France , a party headed by Philippe de Villiers. Both vehemently oppose Turkey's accession to the EU and have expressed fears that Europe is planning to slap a "dangerous product" label on Camembert cheese.

However, divisions among French nationalist parties are never far around the corner. The president of the FN openly criticised de Villiers for his alliance with Libertas, labelling its leader Declan Ganley as "a locomotive millionaire suspected to be an American official".

So, finally Declan Ganley announced his alliance with Philippe de Villiers. That had been expected for some months now.

I was a member of de Villiers' party for 2 years, during the mid-nineties. I was very young, I came from a right-wing family, it was an era of very high corruption (the last days of Mitterrand) and a certain loss of prestige of free-masonry. Philippe de Villiers seemed to be the most dynamic person of the moment.

It was also becoming obvious that Europe had taken a wrong direction with the Maastricht treaty, and that even for the sake of Europe some resistance was needed, at least for those who had courage.

The first thing that surprised me was the de facto social rift between the members. If you were from a common family, you had the right to attend the party's meetings at a local level, and to glue the posters at night for your candidate, during the elections. Those from gentry families were immediately appointed as the heads of the local groups, they had direct access to de Villiers himself, and they were selected as candidates.

It looked like a return of the Ancien Régime. It was such a caricature it almost looked stupid. I even drove once with a local count who was telling me that the nobles were chosen by the population during the Middle-Ages, because they were more dynamic, more intelligent, and they could lead the communities for the common good. Another time I had dinner with 3 gentlemen, they discussed their pedigrees and the origins of their names, then one turned to me and asked: "Et alors vous vous êtes de la roture?". He was half-joking, only half.

But the most bizarre was that the gentlemen and gentlewomen who opposed the ideas of Philippe de Villiers were still allowed to become the local leaders of his party. Villiers being at the time the main opponent to federal Europe, he attracted many eurosceptics, who were contradicted, scorned or even betrayed by his representatives at the local level. Once a local marquis or something, head of the party for a large town, was asked what he was doing at the moment against federal Europe. He replied: "I dine with the Thibauld de Silguy family. The son is the European Commisionner for the creation of the Euro, but his father is strictly against it".

The presence of the gentry was not the only bizarre element in de Villiers' organization. He was supposed to be a devout Catholic, but only if the priests were right-wing. Throughout his organization the Faith was like a house boiler with technical problems, sometimes burning bright and loud, sometimes coughing, sometimes extremely cold.

Patriotism also had its weaker moments. The Nation was supposed to be paramount, but not when you had to pay taxes. The State, public health, the education and the social level had to be very strong, only without public budget. We were all united as French, except you could frown at a party comrade if he revealed to you that he had been educated in a free, State-owned primary school.

My economic education at the time was also very weak. It took a long time for me to understand that de Villiers' moral values were also completely incompatible with his economic choices. A totally free, competitive market means first a globalized society, not at all a return to national roots. Then it also means a consumer mentality, isolated individuals, unethical activities (to remain polite), and it also means more organized crime. Where do you find the Catholic family life in all that?

Even his voice, his tone and his eloquence were ambiguous. Sometimes a grand orator in the best eighteenth century style, sometimes foul mouthed and insulting like a back-street bad boy. But always biting anyway, always cutting, always negative. An ace of spades.

I also grew a doubt about his real ambitions as a politician. This is something that you won't understand if you have never been a member of a party. It is frequent that a politician runs for an election at a certain geographical level, not with the intention of winning seriously, but in order to strengthen his position for the next election, at another geographical level. He just wants to appear on the scene, to stifle rivals... The more I observe de Villiers career, the more I see that the only tangible result of all his activities has been to keep him in the role of completely unchallenged head of his county, the Vendée.

Even his rhetoric about the Ancien Régime, the evilness of free-masonry and our Christian roots, does he really believe it, or did he develop this legend only in order to become the head of that historically anti-revolutionary county, to develop his historical summer festival, etc? Because when he needs business meetings for his county, political horse-trading for keeping his seat, or course he meets with anybody, of course he allies without scruples with the "evil" ones.

You will have understood by now that I have a rather negative opinion of M. de Villiers. I think he is some kind of pirate. I think he is not sincere in what he says. I think he does not have a genuine, thought-out program for the nation, but that his great and only talent is to make political coups, and the European elections are very convenient for quick coups. To be frank, I'm not sure Declan Ganley is that dark.

Anyway, I don't know which one will harm the other most. Maybe Ganley will destroy Villiers' campaign in France because of an assimilation with "Anglo-Saxon influence" in the public's mind. Maybe the brilliant but sinister and somewhat dangerous personality of de Villiers will cool certain minds in Ireland and Britain.

I don't know. It doesn't seem like a good idea to me.
