Ganley on 9% in Irish Times poll

Declan Ganley is on 9% according to a poll that will be published in tomorrow's Irish Times. This will not be enough to get a seat in the North West constituency. Neither of the other two Libertas candidate the racists Raymond O'Malley and the anti abortion candidate Caroline Simons are not in the running in Dublin at only 1% and the East constituency.

Despite spending millions of Euros Libertas ahve failed to convince Irish voters to accept their far right agenda. Declan Ganley has said he will not pursue a campaign against the second Lisbon referendum if he fails to get elected.

Libertas team up with German AUF Partei how much did that cost Ganley?

Libertas has also formed an alliance with the German AUF Partei (the Party for Work, Environment and Family). The tie-up follows Libertas’s failure to meet the deadline for registering its own candidates in Germany. Under the alliance any AUF candidates elected have agreed to join a Libertas political group in the parliament.

AUF are anti Gay, and want a xenophobic Christian Europe. They are presumably anti Jewish and Arab too.

Oh and they are also Anti abortion .

It must be noted that Hitler came to power by harnessing small town German Christians in a cynical campaign which claimed modertaes were Marxists. Declan Ganley in his new book says that the EU is a communist totalitarian state. Oh my the similarities don't end there.

Abortion is a confused issue for Libertas. Emails I have received from Libertas people recently gave out to me for saying that Libertas were right wing, they cited Libertas in Holland and Spain as the examples of liberal Libertas parties. however in Ireland libertas say that the Spanish Libertas are just as against the right to choice as themselves.According to a Libertas spokesperson

Ganley is running in a constituency where he hopes pushing an ultra conservative personal policy on social and moral issues will gain him the support that previously elected Dana to the EU parliament. However , Libertas anti abortion activist and candidate for Dublin just this week said that Libertas Holland were free to be pro Abortion. Mixed messages from Libertas are becoming a daily occurrence.

In a statement yesterday, Ms Harkin accused Libertas of “hypocrisy” on the abortion issue.

“Mr Ganley himself has personally chosen Eline Van den Broek who is pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia to top his list [of candidates] in the Netherlands,” said her statement.

Speaking to The Irish Times, Libertas candidate for Dublin Caroline Simons said: “Eline van den Broek has not taken a public position on any of these matters. Marian Harkin has plucked it out of the air.”

Refusing to accept this, Ms Harkin responded: “If she [Ms van den Broek] goes on Dutch TV and says she supports life from conception to natural death and is opposed to embryonic stem-cell research then I will take it all back.

Ganley at a recent meeting of the John Paul II society an ultra conservative Catholic group stated his ultra conservative views on personal issues in the hope that he would get that anti abortion grassroots to campaign for him in his bid for Europe,

Libertas and Harkin clash over abortion

THE LIBERTAS party headed by Declan Ganley has accused Independent MEP for Ireland North-West Marian Harkin of “throwing mud” with her claim that some Libertas supporters in other EU member states are in favour of the right to abortion and euthanasia.

“Libertas has linked up with Cuidadanos a Spanish party and they have formed a coalition to fight the European elections,” Ms Harkin said, in a statement yesterday. “Yet according to their manifesto, this party, Cuidadanos, favours the right to choose when to die and the right to abortion, even up to nine months in certain cases.”

Libertas leader Declan Ganley is a rival of Ms Harkin in the European elections in the North-West constituency. There has been charge and counter-charge between the two on the abortion issue.

Ms Harkin said earlier this week the Libertas candidate in the Netherlands, Eline van den Broek, was “pro-abortion and pro-euthanasia”.

Libertas said Ms Harkin was a member of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group in the European Parliament which was an “active promoter” of abortion and euthanasia.

Ms Harkin responded: “The ALDE group in the European Parliament, contrary to allegations made by Mr Declan Ganley and Libertas, does not have any policy on abortion and regards it as a matter of individual conscience.”

The Libertas spokesman said: “Having baselessly smeared a young lady in the Netherlands, Marian is now throwing mud elsewhere. Our party policy on these issues is clear – Libertas in the European Parliament will defend Ireland’s position on these issues.”

Libertas to cut links with controversial Polish political party

LIBERTAS IS reportedly distancing itself from the League of Polish Families (LPR), a key political ally in its European election campaign in Poland, after its leader was charged with drink driving.

The moved, confirmed by a Libertas official to Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, comes as the government in Warsaw announced a new Bill to reform Polish public television and remove its controversial director, an LPR member and former skinhead.

Libertas founder Declan Ganley appeared with members of the extreme-right, ultra-Catholic LPR at the launch of the Polish wing of the party to contest the June European elections. LPR politicians saw it as a chance to boost their dwindling political relevance two years after failing to make it into the Polish parliament.

But expectations of a revival in the fortunes of a party weakened by infighting and splits are dwindling further after its leader, Miroslaw Orzechowski, was charged with ramming two cars while drunk in Lodz earlier this month.

Police were called by the passengers of the other cars and Mr Orzechowski was found to be over the legal limit. “First he hit my car, then he also scratched the car that was standing near mine,” a witness told Polish television. “My wife hit her hand on the front of Mr Orzechowski’s car to make him stop.”

Mr Orzechowski admits drinking wine before the incident but denies he was driving his car. He later resigned as leader of LPR. He is a familiar face in the Polish media: as deputy education minister he questioned the theory of evolution and called for all homosexual teachers to be fired.

In a separate development, the centre-right government of Donald Tusk has moved to purge public broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP) of political appointees made by the last government, of which LPR was a junior partner.

A key target is TVP director Piotr Farfal, an LPR member and former editor of the anti-Semitic youth magazine Front. “We do not accept cowards, collaborators or Jews. We are the future!” he wrote in a now notorious article for the magazine headlined “Why Be a Skinhead?” Mr Farfal portrays his remarks as youthful indiscretions.

Last week, French-German public broadcaster Arte announced that it was cancelling its 15-year co-operation with TVP because, it said, Mr Farfal’s views were incompatible with Arte’s “philosophy based on intercultural exchange”.

A spokesperson for Libertas declined to comment on whether Libertas still had contacts with LPR members, saying only that it “has never allied itself with political parties in Poland”.

Declan Ganley "Christ's Ambassador"?

In the same issue of the Irish Times that features a tale of Ganley trying to silence yet another press outlet that has criticised him Declan Ganley states that "Christ calls us to be ambassadors".
While this blog advocates religious freedom and freedom from persecution the question must be asked........... Is Libertas a holy crusade? Is it a moral crusade? The party has still failed to provide a program or a manifesto. In the meantime we have only Ganley's comments to go on.

Ganley urges public figures over faith

PUBLIC FIGURES “should never be afraid to speak of their faith, their beliefs and their values”, Declan Ganley, founder of Libertas, has said.

“We are called to be in this world but not of this world and sadly some in this country have allowed the world and all its transient, earthly desires to detract their focus of love and service.”

Referring to Pope Benedict’s 2004 book, Europe Today and Tomorrow, as “highly recommended” and “required reading”, he said: “Our Holy Father teaches us that once society does not treat every life as precious and inviolable from conception to natural death, then man becomes a product subjected to pragmatism and utilitarianism such that abortion, euthanasia and the destruction of human life are presented as false rights and choice.”

Speaking at the John Paul II Society conference in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, at the weekend, he continued: “Christ calls us to be ambassadors for his message. For too long we have been failing in that duty, apologising for our beliefs in a world which doesn’t want to hear them.

“So let’s take the phrase ‘yes we can’ and recognise that ‘yes we must’. Yes, we must take risks for truth. We must not be suppressed or cowed or embarrassed to stand up for our values, for our families and to show love for one another.”

Recordings of some debates became available yesterday. Keynote speaker at the public conference was Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, author of Render Unto Caesar. Ireland was always seen as a Catholic country but it was one where the church’s influence was “softening”, he said. Though welcomed by some, he felt this was a mistake.

NUI Senator Ronan Mullen said there was “an assumption in some quarters of society today that politics and religion should be kept rigidly separate. But separation is not the same as segregation. Religious belief can never be, theoretically or practically, a solely private affair.”

Fianna Fáil Senator Jim Walsh spoke of his opposition to abortion, stem cell research at UCC, and civil partnership. He thanked Fr Brian McKevitt, editor of the controversial Alive magazine, “for bringing such truths to the Irish people”. A standing ovation for Fr McKevitt followed.

Abortion? confused? The shifting sands of Libertas and Ganley on Abortion!

Abortion Confused? – Libertas and Ganley want you to be.

During last year’s Referendum campaign a Libertas leaflet said "The European Court can decide what a human right is. And they can decide whether Abortion is a ‘service’ falling under the ‘free movement of services directive’ That sound like a guarantee to you? "

Ganley tried to reverse that position on TV3 on Sunday 18 May, 2008. He told Ursula Halligan on Ireland's TV3 that Libertas had no position in relation to abortion. When the Halligan showed him a quote attributed to him in relation to this issue in the Mayo Advertiser which was highly provocative he simply denied Libertas had a position on the issue.

On 3 June, 2008 the Irish Independent reported Libertas spokesperson Caroline Simons as saying, truthfully, that the Lisbon Treaty would not give the European Union influence over abortion laws in this country. She elaborated: "In relation to the abortion issue, there is, as you know, since the Maastricht Treaty, a protocol reserving to Ireland the full rights to interpret Article 40.3.3 and keeping that outside the ambit and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice."

Simmons is right the Protocol which has the same binding effect as the Treaty itself reads “Nothing in the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe or in the Treaties or Acts modifying or supplementing it shall affect the application in Ireland of Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution of Ireland.”

Now Ganley is reversing his position again, again spreading confusion and trying to deceive people.

The Irish Times today reports him as telling a conference in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, at the weekend which was organised by the Catholic John Paul II Society and co-hosted by the pro-life Human Life International group that any guarantees given by the EU on social and ethical issues “were not worth the paper they are written on”, where the European Court of Justice was concerned and that: “the laws of the union have primacy over the laws of any member state . . . If there is a conflict, union law rules.”

Ignoring for the moment that Ganley is criticising something that he hasn’t seen and that hasn’t yet been finalised, his suggestion that ‘the laws of the union have primacy over the laws of any member state‘ is untrue in the matter of abortion.

The fact that this line is untrue was recognised by MR JUSTICE IARFHLAITH O’NEILL. Chairman of the Referendum Commission who told a Press Briefing, on Wednesday 4th June 2008

“In regard to abortion, Protocol No. 35 to the Treaty of Lisbon on Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution of Ireland states that nothing in the Treaties or in the Treaties or Acts modifying or supplementing those Treaties, shall affect the application in Ireland of Article 40.3.3 of the Constitution of Ireland.

Protocols have full legal force – they have the same legal status as an Article of the Treaties. This Protocol is EU law and it explicitly excludes Article 40.3.3 of the Irish Constitution from any other EU law.

This means Ireland’s constitutional position on abortion would not be affected by the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty.”

If Ganley won’t listen to the opinion of a High Court Judge who has studied the issue in detail, perhaps he would listen to the in house Libertas legal expert. The reality is of course that he is less interested in facts – his real aim is confusion.
