Less than a week after it launched as the first truly Europe-wide party, the new right-wing alliance Libertas is already looking shaky amid a flurry of accusations about links with notorious anti-Semites, questionable funding methods and even an allegation that it is part of a Russian plot to destabilise the EU.

The movement, led by Declan Ganley - the controversial Irish businessman behind the No campaign that defeated a referendum on the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland last year - wants similar votes across Europe on all new treaties. With at least 200 Libertas candidates already signed up to stand in 23 countries, Ganley pulled off a major coup in persuading the legendary Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa to kick off their election campaign in Rome. Walesa seemed to wholeheartedly throw his weight behind the new party, telling its candidates that "I am with you always". His endorsement of Declan Ganley and the new party could hardly be more fullsome, saying Libertas and its leader were a "a force for good in the world" who had the potential to "change Europe for the better".

But back in Poland, where Libertas has been headed by the League of Polish Families, who advocate the "elimination of Jewish influence" from Polish life and business, Walesa has been pilloried. His former comrades in the ruling Civic Platform Party, for which his son is standing in June, were quick to turn on him, with one prominent commentator claiming Walesa was acting as a Russian spy and a stooge of the Kremlin.

Having admitted that he was paid handsomely for the address in Rome, Walesa said he still supports his old party colleagues, although he would like some Libertas candidates to enter the European Parliament. "It's better when radicals follow some rules," he claims.

It has also emerged that Libertas's campaign in Poland is being funded with loans Ganley has personally undertaken to underwrite, getting through a loophole in Polish law over foreign electoral funding. But Libertas's French arm, led by the royalist former presidental candidate Philippe de Villiers, denies the practice is widespread and told RFI they will not be taking a centime from Ganley, since such funding would be illegal in France.

The inclusion of De Villiers, who is doggedly anti-Europe, anti-Nato, and against Turkey's entry into the EU, also points to some glaring inconsistencies about policy within Libertas. Ganley claims he is not against Europe, but just wants to reform it, and make it more democratically accountable. His is also pro-Nato and has said he supports Turkey's entry.

Despite these setbacks, Ganley says Libertas support across the continent has rocketed on the back of its simple message that "Brussels is taking away your freedom without giving you a vote". A huge online petition and advertising campaign , that includes banner adverts on Google's email facility, gmail, has made the party's site the most visited of any in the campaign, with "millions of hits", he says.

Ganley, however, remains an elusive and divisive figure. In Ireland, where he spent a part of his teenage years after being born to Irish parents near London, the former teaboy has been dubbed Doctor No, and The International Man of Mystery. His critics claim he has never given a satisfactory explanation about how he built his fortune, which now rests on contracts to supply communications equipment to the US military.

The fact that Libertas are polling terribly in Poland despite having vast amounts of TV time from the corrupt LPF TVP channel means that their plan to have any significant number of MEPs afetr the June elections is over. Poland has rejected the xenophobic fascism of the own League of Polish Families and have also rejected the anti Polish stance of Libertas in Ireland who want to close the borders to Polish workers,

Civic Platform well ahead in EP opinion poll

According to the latest opinion poll, the ruling Civic Platform will gain almost half of all votes cast in the European parliamentary elections on June 7, while Libertas has failed to interest voters.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Platform is way ahead of the opposition Law and Justice party, according to the poll by PBS DGA.

If the European Parliament elections took place today, Civic Platform would win with 47 percent support, the opposition Law and Justice party would come in second with 25 percent of votes. The Democratic Left Alliance would gain 10 percent support and the Polish Peasant’s Party – the junior coalition party in the current government - would secure nine percent.

The smaller parties are failing to capture voters’ imagination. With the Self Defence party on three percent, Polish Labour Party on two percent, the Real Politics Union one percent, Polish Right party and the Centre-Left party on less than one percent, all would fall under electoral threshold and fail to gain any seats in the European Parliament under Poland’s proportional representation system..

And despite acres of news print and hours of airtime over the past few weeks on Polish media, the anti-Lisbon Treaty Libertas party has made little headway with voters, with just two percent of respondents saying they will vote for them on polling day.

“The survey proves that a low turnout will help the bigger parties like Civic Platform and the Democratic Left Alliance,” Marcin Splawski from PBS DGA pollsters told Gazeta Wyborcza.

The survey was conducted on 22 to 24 May among a sample of 1063.

Lech Walesa says he supports the Lisbon Treaty but will continue to appear at Libertas meetings for fees.

Meanwhile in Germany Libertas will have a meeting addressed by Eva Herman, a German newsreader sacked two years ago for praising Nazi family policies. This comes a day after Irish Libertas candidate Raymond O'Malley has come out against immigration.


Walesa expected in Ireland for Libertas election rally

CAMPAIGN ADDRESS: SOLIDARITY CO-FOUNDER Lech Walesa is expected to address a Libertas European election event in Ireland in the coming days.

The former Polish president has been attacked as a “disgrace” at home for appearing at Libertas events in Rome and Madrid – for a reported fee of €100,000.

As the European election enters its final phase, Mr Walesa’s reported five-city tour is also likely to include an address in Warsaw. Any such appearance will be a controversial one for the Polish icon many of his countrymen have accused of selling out.

“Lech Walesa is a symbol of peaceful democratic changes in Poland and elsewhere in Europe, our ambassador in the world. And now this ambassador disgraces us,” wrote the influential Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper, founded by former Polish dissidents in 1989.

At his second Libertas event, on Wednesday in Madrid, Mr Walesa said he agreed with the Libertas call for a more transparent Europe but that ratifying the Lisbon Treaty was the key to do so. “We must approve Lisbon so that we can change things from inside,” he said.

Mr Walesa refused to comment on claims that he was being paid to attend the meetings.

“Libertas-Citizens of Spain” is a coalition of three minuscule regional parties formed last month and has to date only named three candidates.

One, Miguel Duran, is a controversial character, blind from infancy and who, under circumstances never fully explained, shot from being a 32-year-old professional Braille print operator to head an NGO representing disabled and blind people in Spain. Under his leadership the organisation, Once, became immensely powerful with fingers in many financial pies, and Mr Duran himself became very wealthy.

He went on to become the head of Tele 5, one of Spain’s largest private television companies.

In 1998 he was charged with insider trading and other financial irregularities and was only finally acquitted by the Supreme Court last year.

Meanwhile in Austria, the lead candidate of the late Jörg Haider’s far-right Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZÖ), said Libertas approached the party with the idea of a joint election bid.

“They sounded us out about a co-operation before the election. But we always made clear that we will run as the BZÖ and not under the name of anyone else,” said Ewald Stadler to Austria’s Tiroler Zeitung newspaper.

In Germany, Libertas will today launch a joint campaign with the AUF, a year-old Christian environmental party.

After missing the deadline to submit its own candidates, the AUF’s 11 election candidates have agreed to support Libertas if elected.

The joint campaign will be launched in Frankfurt with a speech by Eva Herman, a German newsreader sacked two years ago for praising Nazi family policies. the Lisbon Treaty but will be paid to speek at another Libertas rally in Dublin.

Libertas candidates in Poland support Death penalty and hates gays and lesbians and human rights

Declan Ganley may talk a lot but who his friends are speaks volumes.

During his term of office as councillor, MEP, and Member of Parliament, he was repeatedly criticized by [...] LGBT organizations. These include in 2004 "for reasons of hygiene" he refused to shake the hands of the organizers of the equality parade. In the same year he published on his website a list of gays and lesbians [1]. His actions and statements were criticized, including by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, who evaluated them as calls for human rights violations [2] [3].

In [the last] parliamentary elections in 2007 he was an unsuccessful candidate for the Sejm [Polish parliament]. On 6 March 2009, he took over as President of the League of Polish Families, after the resignation of Miroslaw Orzechowski [4]. On 19 April this year, he resigned from all functions in the party. Then he became a Libertas candidate for the elections to the European Parliament.

In the 2007 parliamentary elections she gained a parliamentary mandate for the fourth time. A candidate for the Prawo i Sprawiedliwość* [Rights and Justice party] in the district of Torun, she received 15,180 votes.

In 2009 she registered as a Libertas Poland candidate for the European Parliament.

*Among the policies of this party is 'przywrócenie kary śmierci' ('the restoration of the death penalty').

So someone elected for PiS, a party which supports the 'restoration of the death penalty', is running as a candidate under the Libertas name.

In addition, she's proposed a tax on citizens without children and wants working women to be paid to give up their jobs and stay at home to look after their kids.

Who are the League of Polish Families? Ganley's biggest ally in Europe. Racist Anti Semitic far right fanatics is who.

Polish nationalism resurgent

The enlargement of Poland's conservative government by two parties, variously described as populist, nationalist or anti-EU, is proving controversial.

It has evoked unease in Brussels, among Jewish organisations in the West, and among politicians and political commentators in neighbouring countries like Germany.

Students protested in Warsaw against the new education minister

An official in the government has also quit her job in protest against the populist Andrzej Lepper being invited to join the government as agriculture minister and deputy prime minister.

Irena Lipowicz was in charge of Polish-German relations at the foreign office.

Her departure followed the resignation of veteran diplomat Stefan Meller as foreign minister.

New education minister Roman Giertych, an ultra-conservative Eurosceptic, is also a controversial figure.

Last September's Polish parliamentary elections proved a disaster for the then ruling ex-communist Democratic Left Alliance.

It had reconstituted itself in the early 1990s as a Western-type social-democrat party and claimed to draw inspiration from the UK's New Labour and its leader, Tony Blair.

In its place came the Law and Justice Party (PiS).

Traditional values

Law and Justice pursues a conservative social agenda - opposed to more liberal abortion legislation, gay marriages and the legalisation of "soft" drugs.

It would also like to reinstate the death penalty.

Eurosceptics have joined the conservative government

Its economic policies have been described as "centre-left": a strong state-run welfare system and continued state ownership of several strategic industries.

Law and Justice supports further EU integration "on terms advantageous for Poland". It also continues to back Polish military involvement in Iraq.

More controversially, from a Central European perspective, Law and Justice leaders claim that Poland's peacefully negotiated transition to democracy, 17 years ago, was actually a "stitch-up" between the Communists and a coterie of centre-left dissidents.

They perpetuated some of the abuses of the old system and sought to marginalise people of a more traditionally patriotic persuasion, the party says.

Hence Law and Justice's claims to be carrying out a root-and-branch clearing out of corruption and to be building a new Polish "Fourth Republic".

Controversial leader

Since Friday, Law and Justice has been joined in government by two even more controversial parties: Self-Defence and the League of Polish Families.

Self-Defence now have the ministries of agriculture and maritime economy, while the League has the education portfolio.

Self-Defence was founded in 1992 as a pressure group representing certain rural interests: former collective farm labourers, small local businessmen, and lower-level members of the Communist-era rural bureaucracy.

It drew attention to itself by noisy demonstrations - blocking roads and depositing manure outside government offices.

Latterly, it has smartened its image and sought to broaden its appeal to the urban working and lower-middle classes. It had its best result so far in September's parliamentary elections, winning 12% of the vote.

Self-Defence's former opposition to the European Union is tempered by the knowledge that many of its supporters now benefit from EU subsidies.

In joining the government, it has also agreed to tone down earlier claims that social welfare spending could be boosted by increasing the national debt and by raiding Poland's currency reserves.

Self-Defence has also tried to forget some of the more controversial assertions of its leader, Mr Lepper, who once praised Adolf Hitler's economic policies and claimed that Poland should cultivate close relations with Russia and Belarus.

Conservative Catholics

The League of Polish Families has a much older political pedigree.

Established five years ago from a fusion of several so-called "Catholic-nationalist" groups, it claims to be the successor of Poland's main pre-war right-wing opposition party - the National Democrats.

Its leader, Roman Giertych, is the grandson and great-grandson of prominent National Democrat politicians.

The National Democrats called for a centralised state, in which the Catholic Church - as a symbol of national identity - would have a privileged position.

They advocated the forced assimilation of national minorities and the elimination of Jewish influence in business and the professions.

Vehemently anti-German, they urged Poles to overcome their traditional prejudices and seek a close understanding with Russia.

The League of Polish Families campaigned against Polish membership of the European Union.

Its youth wing regularly takes part in anti-gay and anti-abortion demonstrations.

It opposes "excessive" foreign investment - and wants the state to retain control of "strategic" enterprises.

Like Self-Defence, it has called for the immediate pull-out of Polish troops from Iraq.

The League won 8% of the vote in September's elections - but has since declined in opinion polls.

Cameron's bad day in Europe

Not the best of days today for David Cameron, the Conservative leader, as he struggles to fulfil a pledge to create a new Eurosceptic grouping in the European Parliament, and pull British MEPs out of the main centre-right grouping there, the EPP.

The Conservatives are looking lonely in Brussels

As this blog has discussed before, there are two main foreign partners in the frame, the Czech ODS party, and the Polish Law and Justice (PiS) party. On both fronts, Cameron had a bad day.

The Czechs first. As the Daily Telegraph revealed last week, David Cameron went to Prague last week for a secret meeting with Mirek Topolanek, the ODS leader.

What happened at that meeting is supposed to be a secret, but someone gave me a read-out today. In essence, the Czechs seem to have fudged what they told Cameron: we are not ready to make a break from the EPP just now, but have not ruled it out, they said.

It is true Topolanek is busy. The ODS won last month's general elections, but did not win big (as they say in the US). Even after forming an alliance with two smaller parties (the Greens and the Christian Democrats) the parliament is now hung, 100 to 100, and that is blocking all moves to form a new government. The ODS coalition cannot even get a speaker elected, which is a vital first step to taking office.

So the Czechs do not want any distractions, especially one that might annoy their potential coalition partners. That means no sudden moves in Europe. The fate of the ODS leader in the European Parliament, Jan Zahradil, is also intriguing. Zahradil is a big supporter of joining the British Tories in a new group. His British Eurosceptic friends were all predicting he would deliver on that, not least as he was about to become the new Czech foreign minister.

But when the ODS published its draft cabinet list, the posts of foreign minister and Europe minister have been earmarked for pro-EPP candidates, both of them former diplomats. Zahradil has been given nothing.

And the Poles? They are desperate to join the new group, because they are sick of being painted as extremist fruitcakes, and joining the British Conservatives would be a powerful symbol for them back home that they are mainstream politicians. The problem is, to keep power back in Poland, Law and Justice recently forged a formal coalition with two parties that can best be described as extremist fruitcakes. In the process, Law and Justice handed senior cabinet posts to some unsavoury types from the "Self-Defence Party" (hates free trade), and the "League of Polish Families" (hates gay people, hates foreigners, has a youth wing with a track record of venomous anti-Semitism).

Thanks to League ministers, the Polish government just nominated a young man as deputy head of the Polish state broadcaster, whose name and home address used to appear on the masthead of a neo-Nazi magazine, filled with anti-Semitic paranoia, and articles about the SS.

So why was today a bad day in Europe for Cameron's Polish allies? Because the League of Polish Families went off on another, highly embarrassing, rant. The occasion was a debate at the European Parliament, to mark 70 years since General Franco seized power in Spain.

One by one, MEPs stood up to mourn the Spanish civil war, and the years of the Franco dictatorship. And then up stood Maciej Giertych, a League member, and father of the League's leader, Roman Giertych (recently made a deputy prime minister by Law and Justice).

Giertych senior decided it was time to hail Franco and his Fascist party, for preventing Communist rule in Spain and protected the Roman Catholic church.

"Thanks to the Spanish right, to the Spanish army and its commanders, and in particular thanks to General Francisco Franco, the Communist attack on Catholic Spain was thwarted," Giertych said.

"The presence in European politics of such people as Franco ... guaranteed the maintenance of traditional values in Europe," he concluded, setting off furious protests from other MEPs.

Now, it is only fair to note that nobody is suggesting the League of Polish Families should be in the new Tory-led Euro-group. The League is a separate party from Law and Justice. In fact, it does not even sit in the same group as Law and Justice in the European Parliament.

But can David Cameron expect every British media outlet to make that distinction? Or the Labour Government? It is not that hard to imagine them saying that the allies of Mr Cameron's new allies are fascist sympathisers.
Does that matter? My sense is: it matters enough that Cameron and William Hague, his shadow foreign secretary, would greatly prefer to form a new group with the Czechs and the Poles, rather than just with the Poles. Is that a deal-breaker? The next few weeks will tell us.

Reverse Polish logic

Under the headline “Darwin under fire in Poland,” Spiegel Online has this depressing little item:

Poland’s deputy education minister has called for Polish schools to ditch Darwinism in favor of creationism. His party is also well known for gay bashing and for wanting to introduce the death penalty.

… Orzechowski is intent on keeping Darwinism from falling into the wrong heads. In a recent interview, he com-
mented that it was “sad” that the “lie” of the evolution theories of Charles Darwin were being taught in Polish schools, and called for a debate on whether Darwin’s theories should be purged from the school curriculum.

Orzechowski’s position is not totally surprising. The minister belongs to the ultra-Catholic rightwing party the League of Polish Families (LPR), a junior partner in Poland’s conservative government. Other European governments have been alarmed by the LPR’s campaigns against gay rights, their purported anti-Semitism, their support for an abortion ban, and their calls for a re-introduction of the death penalty (something which would be illegal under European Union law).

Orzechowski believes that creationism, which he described as a “truth of civilization” that has been “confirmed by thousands of generations”, should be taught instead of Darwinian theories. The Darwinist idea that apes and people were related was “pseudo-science” for “non-believers,” he said.

… Orzechowski is not the first in the LPR to come out in favor of creationism. LPR Member of the European Parliament Maciej Giertych organized a creationism conference at the European Parliament in October, where he said Darwinism should not be taught in schools. Giertych, who is a biology professor by trade, claimed that humans had had contact with dinosaurs and that Neanderthals continue to live among us.

And apparently they live in Poland.

Nie, a Polish newspaper, has a different theory. In an article on Orzechowski and his fellow creationist crazies, it noted that some people clearly had “donkeys rather than apes as their ancestors.”

Maciej Marian Giertych (NI ). – (PL) Mr President, the fact that today, throughout Central and Western Europe, we have democracy, civil liberties, private ownership and tolerance is due to the fact that Communism did not take hold on our continent, although it could have. In Eastern Europe, a dam against Communism was created by the victorious battle of the Poles against the Bolsheviks in 1920 and the decisive resistance of Catholic Poland against enforced Soviet dominance. The fact that Communism did not take root in the West is largely thanks to the victorious civil war fought by traditional Spain against Communist governments. Although it came to power democratically, the Spanish left behaved in a similar manner to the left in Bolshevik Russia, where the main target of attacks was the Church. Almost 7 000 priests were murdered. Churches were desecrated, roadside crosses and holy statues were shot at. Traditional forces immediately responded to this attack on Catholic Spain. The International Brigades, organised by Bolshevik Russia, came to the aid of Communist Spain. In accordance with Communist custom, these brigades were entirely controlled by Communist party cells and their secret services, as was the whole republican regime. Thanks to the Spanish right, the Spanish army, its leaders and thanks to General Francisco Franco in particular, the Communist attack on Catholic Spain was thwarted. By the same token, attempts to spread the Communist plague to other countries were also halted. The presence of figures such as Franco, Salazar or De Valera in European politics ensured that Europe maintained its traditional values. We lack such statesmen today. It is with some regret that we observe today the phenomenon of historical revisionism, which portrays all that is traditional and Catholic in an unfavourable light and everything that is secular and socialist in a favourable light. Let us remember that Nazism in Germany and fascism in Italy also had socialist and atheist roots. The power wielded by the socialist and anti-Catholic bloc in this House is cause for great concern. We saw clear examples of this power during the voting last month on the texts on tolerance and the Seventh Framework Programme. Christian Europe is losing the battle against a socialist and atheist Europe. This has to change! (Protests)

Some Polish lawmakers want to make Jesus the honorary king of their overwhelmingly Catholic country, Rzeczpospolita daily newspaper reported on Wednesday.

…Deputy Artur Gorski said some of his colleagues ‘were praying in the parliamentary chapel for (Jesus’) coronation.’

Gorski is a member of the ruling Law and Justice Party; the proposal is backed by the far-right League of Polish Families and the Polish Peasants’ Party:

Wierzejski was formerly head of the All-Polish Youth, a violent skinhead organisation with unambiguous Neo-Nazi tendencies, as I blogged just recently. He is also notorious for calling for violence against a gay-rights parade:

gay by definition is a coward, so when German politicians get a number of baton-hits, then they will not come again.

Gorski, meanwhile, has a theological background, as noted in Warsaw Voice:

Nasz Dziennik, an eight-page tabloid-format newspaper costing zl.0.70, intends to fill the “Catholic press void.” Artur Górski, the newspaper’s editor-in-chief who graduated from the Catholic Theological Academy, was a journalist for the Polish Press Agency and is a Monarchist Club activist. He describes his newspaper as right-wing Catholic…

Details of the “Monarchist Club” in English are scarce; however, the Polish Wikipedia entry includes subheadings such as “Katolicki tradycjonalizm” and “Antydemokratyzm”. For those who read Polish, Gorski explains his campaign on his website.

The Reuters report adds:

Time magazine explained the circumstances in 1983:

For Poles, the Black Madonna of Czestochowa is far more than an object of Roman Catholic reverence…By legend, the painting is attributed to St. Luke the Evangelist, and was executed on a table top from the house of Mary, Joseph and Jesus in Nazareth.

…The Madonna’s status as an emblem of Polish nationalism dates from Sweden’s invasion of the country in 1655. For 40 days, as the Swedes surrounded the monastery, the monks prayed to the Virgin for deliverance. The siege failed, and the Poles subsequently drove the Swedes out of the country. In gratitude, the reigning Polish monarch, Jan Kazimierz, dedicated his throne and the country to “the Virgin Mary, Queen of Poland.”

The Virgin Mary’s status as Queen of Poland was re-established fifty years ago, and was the subject of anniversary celebrations in August (such as this one in Scotland).

This time, though, the enemy is not the Swedish army, but European secularisation:

“Poland’s deep spirituality may be able to rescue Europe from drowning in a lack of faith and morality,” the authors of the declaration said in their justification of the initiative.

However, the Catholic Church in Poland appears sceptical of this attempt to revive the spirit of Jan Kazimierz:

“Let parliament deal with passing better laws that we need,” Gdansk Archbishop Tadeusz Goclowski said.

“This kind of action, although it may stem from good will, sounds a bit like propaganda,” said bishop Tadeusz Pieronk.

Lawmakers present proposal to proclaim Christ King of Poland

Warsaw, Poland, Jul 18, 2007 / 11:35 am (CNA).- Forty six Polish lawmakers signed a proposal last week that would proclaim Christ as King of Poland. The idea is being promoted by the League of Polish Families, the Law and Justice Party, and the Party of Farm Workers.

Representative Artur Gorski of the Law and Justice Party is leading the initiative. “We want Jesus Christ to be named king of the Poles,” he said, adding that, “More than ever Poland needs leadership and divine help to face new times. Some may mock our proposal, but for me it is a question of religious sensibility and political respect,” Gorski said in an interview with the Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza.

He said he was hopeful the Church would support the measure. “All I can say is that since I first spoke of this idea I have received nine thousand letters of support,” he stated.

League of Polish families calls for restoring death penalty

The rightist League of Polish Families, a minority party in the ruling coalition, demands changes in the Polish penal code announcing a campaign to restore the death penalty. The party has launched an action aiming to collect half a million signatures on a petition demanding capital punishment for pedophile murderers.

The League of Polish families also calls for a national referendum in which Poles would answer two questions: whether they support the capital punishment for murderers of children under 15 and whether they consider pedophile a crime. Wojciech Wierzejski who heads the committee said that the present methods of educating criminals are ineffective and so death penalty should be introduced.

The initiative has met with outright criticism from the European Union, which said that the death penalty is not compatible with European values. The action of the League of Polish families follows a recent statement by Poland’s president Lech Kaczynski who said that the EU should consider a debate on restoring death penalty. Last week Kaczynski said that giving up capital punishment is awarding advantage to the criminal over his victim. Poland abolished capital punishment in 1997 after a moratorium in 1998.

Polish Anti-Evolutionist Politician Fires Neo-Nazi Assistant

Back in October, Nature published an article about Creationism in Poland:

…”The theory of evolution is a lie,” Miroslaw Orzechowski, Poland’s deputy education minister, told the newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza on 14 October. “It is an error we have legalized as a common truth.”

The LPR [Liga Polskich Rodzin, League of Polish Families] entered the ruling coalition in May 2006. Its leader, Roman Giertych, is also known to favour creationist views. These, as well as his openly homophobic, anti-Semitic and nationalistic opinions, have sparked student demonstrations in Warsaw since he took the minister of education job in May.

Giertych’s father, Maciej Giertych, is an LPR member in the European Parliament and is lobbying for obligatory inclusion of creationism in Polish biology curricula. Maciej, who holds a PhD in tree physiology from the University of Toronto, Canada, claims darwinian evolution is refuted by scientific evidence.

Maciej Giertych then wrote to Nature, bizarrely complaining that he was not a Creationist, but that he believed all the Creationist arguments: microevolution is a reduction in genetic information; there are no positive mutations; dinosaurs co-existed with humans; and so on. Giertych’s assertions were dismantled by numerous scientists in a subsequent issue, and these have been preserved at Pharyngula. The most interesting was from Ulrich Kutschera of the University of Kassel, who refered to an earlier report about Creationism at the European Parliament:

Your Special Report “Anti-evolutionists raise their profile in Europe” (Nature 444, 406407; 2006) mentions a seminar held in Brussels at the European Parliament on 11 October 2006, as part of a new strategy by supporters of intelligent design (ID) to disseminate anti-evolutionism among the general public of Europe.

…The anti-evolution seminar was a series of three public lectures, introduced and moderated by Giertych, who is the retired head of the genetics department of the Polish Academy of Sciences and an honorary member of the Daylight Origins Society, a Catholic creationist organization based in Britain. The seminar was co-organized by Dominique Tassot, director of the Centre d’Etude et de Prospectives sur la Science, an association of 700 Catholic intellectuals who do not accept macroevolution because it is in conflict with their interpretation of the Bible…

Maciej and his son Roman Giertych have been featured on this blog before; Roman is the education minister, and his League of Polish Families has also been vocal in opposing gay rights. WorldNetDaily covered a sinister march through Warsaw organized by the group, while declining to tell readers about its far-right philosophy.

Roman Giertych is also the honorary chairman of the All Polish Youth, a skinhead group that he used to lead. A few days ago a 2004 video surfaced which showed All Polish Youth at a neo-Nazi rally, complete with burning swastika, Nazi flags and “Sieg Heil”s. One detail:

The newspaper [Dziennik] said a young woman in the video was Leokadia Zwiazek, an assistant of Giertych’s father Maciej Giertych who is a member of the European Parliament and the LPR.

But Giertych denied the accusation and asked prosecutors to investigate the incident.

However, shortly thereafter Zwiazek was dismissed. Roman added:

“Anyone who propagates the swastika in Poland is not only an idiot, but also a criminal,”…

So you see, Maciej and Roman Giertych are not neo-Nazis. In the same way that they’re not Creationists.

Meanwhile, Maciej’s younger brother Fr Wojciech Giertych is keeping a low profile – as I noted a year ago, he’s the current “Theologian of the Papal Household”, which means he sub-edits the Pope’s writings and speeches. Of course, he’s not his brother’s keeper, but one would like to know just what links, if any, he keeps with his far-right family.

Racist Pamphlet Shows Anti-Semitism In Poland Is 'Alive And Well'

New York, NY, February 16, 2007 … The publication of an anti-Semitic and racist diatribe by a leading Polish member of the European Parliament shows that "anti-Semitism is alive and well in Poland," the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said today.

"Civilization at War in Europe," a pamphlet published by European Parliament member Maciej Giertych, accuses Jews of "jealously nurturing their chosenness" and suggesting that Jews are a "tragic community … who did not recognize Jesus Christ as the awaited Messiah." Giertych's son, Roman Giertych, leads the far-right League of Polish Families (LPF) and is Poland's Education Minister.

"Maciej Giertych's pamphlet is anti-Semitic and racist from beginning to end," said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, who was born in Poland and is a Holocaust survivor. "It shows that anti-Semitism is not only alive and well in Poland, but is viewed by some as a commodity to be exported to the rest of Europe -- a commodity of hate.

"As Poland knows too well from its history, when anti-Semitism is permitted to flourish, democracy and freedom are at risk," added Mr. Foxman. "It is shameful that members of the parties in the governing coalition in Poland, and in the European parliament, continue to stand silent as their fellow parliamentarians give voice to anti-Semitism, racism and bigotry."

The Giertych pamphlet, published February 14 and made available on his Web site, contains outright anti-Semitic assertions and rehashes age-old stereotypes, such as the claim that the Jewish religion encourages dishonesty in business dealings. The pamphlet also makes false claims about Jewish history by suggesting, for example, that until the advent of the Nazis, Jews voluntarily lived in ghettoes. Credible scholarship recognizes that the ghetto was enforced on European Jewry.

In 2006, ADL published the report, Poland: Democracy and The Challenge of Extremism, which outlined serious concerns about the inclusion of anti-Semitic and xenophobic parties in Poland's governing coalition.

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

Libertas allies with fringe right wing in Poland

The Polish branch of the anti-Lisbon Treaty Libertas Party, and two small far-right parties, will draw up a common list of candidates for June’s election for the European Parliament.

Libertas Polska will be supported by the League of Polish Families (LPR) – a junior coalition partner in the 2006-2007 government, and Naprzod Polsko-Piast a small party created by former MPs from LPR and the Polish Peasant Party (PSL).

Two incumbent MEPs from the Union for Europe of the Nations Group will also strive for re-election from the list: Dariusz Grabowski and Zdzislaw Podkanski.

“We love Europe and we want a better European Union, without the sinister Treaty of Lisbon,” deputy leader of Libertas Polska, Artur Zawisza told Gazeta Wyborcza.

Leader of Liberas, Irish millionaire Declan Ganley, declared that he wants the elections to the European Parliament to be a referendum against the “anti-democratic Brussels and Treaty of Lisbon”. Ganley led the successful “No” campaign against the Lisbon Treaty in Ireland last year.

Election funding

The election campaign in Poland will be financed by Declan Ganley himself, as current support for LPR and other fringe parties on the right wing of Polish politics have little support within the country and would consequently struggle to meet the costs themselves.

Though European election law insists that campaign funds must come from within the relevant nations, Ganley will secure loans taken out in Poland, so finding a way around the rule, it was revealed late last month. Libertas Polska will then default on the loans, forcing banks to seek recompense from Ganley himself.

Vice President Artur Zawisza was quoted in the Polityka weekly, March 28, as saying: ""The most important thing for banks is to assess the creditworthiness and the collateral. I know they consulted with Mr. Declan Ganley." (jg/pg)

Despite their claim to be the party of transparency Libertas have again failed to make public the sources of their funding and details of defence contractor Rivada Networks early funding. Rivada Networks offices, phones and paid employees David Cochrane and Naoise Nunn were all utilised to set up Libertas.

Libertas founder to fund Polish party through the back door?

Irish millionaire businessman Declan Ganley plans to take advantage of a loophole in Polish law that would allow him to fund the Polish branch of euroskeptic political party Libertas.

Polish law bans foreign financial funding in domestic politics, but Ganley appears to have found a way to bypass current legislation. The founder of Libertas and ardent euroskeptic proposes to act as a guarantor if Libertas Poland are unable to repay the bank loans issued to run the party.

The story broke in Saturday's edition of Dziennik and provoked outrage amongst politicians, who described the news as “scandalous.”

Zbigniew Chlebowski, PO's parliamentary club leader, called the news “unsettling” as, “a bank guarantee that gives a party money for elections can be given by a person that is prohibited by law to do so. This means to circumvent the existing rules,” he said.

Mr Chlebowski called for fast and decisive action in dealing with Mr Ganley's proposed funding, and expects advice from specialist lawyers to be available in the coming days.

Libertas refuses to go public on party funding

LIBERTAS last night supplied the State's ethics watchdog with a series of financial documents in a bid to provide "detailed answers" about its funding.

But the anti-Lisbon Treaty organisation will not be making public any copies of the bank statements or loan agreements, despite its own calls for greater political transparency.

Two weeks ago, the organisation failed to provide adequate information to the Standards in Public Office (Sipo) commission on where it got the money to fund its expensive campaign for a 'No' vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum. It has since been accused of "not being willing to operate under the Law" by Fianna Fail.

Libertas last night submitted documents in relation to three key issues queried. Copies of a €200,000 loan agreement between Libertas chief Declan Ganley and the organisation were provided, after Sipo first wrote to it last June seeking details of any loans provided to the organisation for the referendum campaign.

Details of the thousands of books on the Lisbon Treaty supplied by the Foundation for European Democracy and distributed by Mr Ganley were also submitted.

Sipo had raised questions about whether these constituted a donation because the material could be deemed to be influencing the vote's outcome.

However, legal advisers for Libertas are said to have argued that the books do not constitute a donation because the material was neutral and simply relayed the contents of the Lisbon Treaty.

The third aspect of the submission covers the employees of Mr Ganley's Rivada company, who worked for Libertas in their spare time and on a voluntary basis. Sipo again questioned if the use of these employees constituted a donation. Documents provided seek to outline when staff worked for Rivada, then moved to Libertas.

Asked why the organisation had decided against making the documents public, a spokesman said: "Why would we make them public, spend weeks explaining the details and have the Opposition attacking the contents when they won't do the same thing. There's a need for fairness."

The modern incarnation of the All-Polish Youth was founded in Poznań in 1989, on the initiative of Roman Giertych, the former leader of the League of Polish Families (LPR). Continuing the tradition of its precursors, the organisation maintains its aim of raising youth with their ideology, and operates across all of Poland, working with high-school and university students. The membership of the organisation is approximately 3,000 people.

In 2006 the office of the Polish public prosecutor has launched an investigation after video recording from a private party in which All-Polish Youth members including Leokadia Wiącek, a personal assistant of Maciej Giertych (member of the European Parliament), were seen fraternizing with Neo-Nazi skinheads, listening to Neo-Nazi bands and saluting the swastika, was leaked to Polish press^[6][7][8].

Marek Edelman, the last living commander of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising told the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper: “All-Polish Youth should have been delegalized years ago. The Prime Minister said that this is a scandal, but he invited Roman Giertych to his government and because of this he doesn’t have clean hands in this case”.

WARSAW (EJP)--- The office of the Polish public prosecutor has launched an investigation after a movie clip featuring a group of youngsters gathering around a burning swastika and chanting “Sieg Heil” was sent to one of the country’s daily newspapers.

The editors of Dziennik reported on 28 November that they were sent the 60-second-long film portraying the activities of the All-Polish Youth (APY), creating massive controversy around Poland over the group.

All-Polish Youth is a radically nationalist and anti-Semitic organization associated with the League of Polish Families – a right-wing party that is currently in the government coalition.

Polish deputy primer minister and minister of education Roman Giertych is a creator and honorary president of the APY.

Journalists, when watching the movie clip, have recognized Leokadia Wiacek and Pawel Schmidt. Wiącek is currently a personal assistant of MEP Maciej Giertych, father of Polish deputy prime minister and gained notoriety recently for his call to remove evolution theory from Polish schools.

Schmidt was a candidate from the list of Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński’s Low and Justice Party in the municipal elections that took place a month ago. However he was not elected to the Council of the City of Zabrze is southern Poland.

Prison possibility

The public prosecutor general office already started an investigation. According to the Polish Criminal Code propagation and publish showing of Nazi symbols is prohibited and punished even by imprisonment. Prosecutors are now trying to identify as many people from the movie as possible to indict them.

“Stand up and beat this canting Jewish mug / And proudly fight and proudly shout: / For the white race, for the Polish blood! / Without mercy kill it, without scruples beat the evil” – these are words of the song that was played during the “swastika party”.

This is not the first time when Polish media reveal this kind of materials about the All-Polish Youth. It the past all Poles could watch some other short movies or photos depicting similar behavior of this youth.

In October 2005 Polish newspapers have published a photo showing APY members with gestures of “Sieg Heil”. They explained afterwards that they have been calling a waiter in a restaurant.

The Polish Left Alliance, the biggest left-wing party in Poland, announced already that is going to apply to the Supreme Court to delegalize the All-Polish Youth as a fascist organization.

Marek Edelman, the last living commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, who lives in Polish city of Lodz, told the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper: “All-Polish Youth should have been delegalized years ago. The head of Poland's TVP Piotr Farfal is a political appointee from the time the League of Polish Families were in government and he is accused of using the station to promote Declan Ganley and Libertas's far right message - for example giving live coverage for 20 mins to a Ganley press conference and presenting Ganley's activities as the top news stories on TV news.

Farfal is close to Maciej Giertych MEP, the controversial party founder who was once sanctioned by the Euopean parliamnet for producing anti-Semitic booklet

The French-German station Arte recently ended its cooperation with TVP until such time as Farfal is removed from office due to his racist and anti-Semitic pronouncements.

He has now turned over his channel to Libetas Poland.
TVP have responded by threatening to sue anyone who says they are biased towars Ganley.

Ganley has suceeding in causing a serious split in the League of Polish Families, a far right party whose youth wing has been censured for its neo Nazi behaviour.

These people are the true face of Libertas. Corrupt media and the far right fringe.

Daniel PAWŁOWIEC the far right former member of the MLF and its notorious Youth wing and currently co head of Libertas Poland and is employed by Ganley to run their Polish office, has countered with a complaint to Poland's broadcasting authority.

According to Janusz PALIKOT of Platforma Obywatelska a party that determines to protect minorities : "There are signs that an illegal agreement was concluded between Giertych, LPR's remnants and the millionaire Ganley. ABW leaders should begin to watch LPR, the Management Board and representatives ofTV and not transfer any money "- says PALIKOT. I ask
: "Is Poland is a country where money buys public media, and a foreigners policy may lead ourpolitical activities"?

A top Polish TV journalist, Hanna Lis, refused to interview Declan Ganley despite being requested to so by her boss, Roman Giertych , who is a former League of Polish Families . In 1989, he reactivated the far-right "All-Polish Youth" (Młodzież Wszechpolska) organization, becoming its chairman; he remains honorary chairman to this day.

"I am not for hire" was Ms. Lis's response.

It sounds like the Polish people are not willing to be ground down by Libertas buying power and will continue to resist Declan Ganley's far right alliance.

Poszło o to co jest tematem dnia. Prezes TVP Piotr Farfał na antenie
telewizji publicznej realizuje partyjne cele swego środowiska
politycznego, czyli LPR-u - skarżą się dziennikarze


To pierwszy tak poważny konflikt dziennikarzy z nowym prezesem. Poszło
o promowanie na antenie TVP Declana Ganleya, ekscentrycznego
milionera, który doprowadził do fiaska traktatu lizbońskiego w
Irlandii.

W piątek TVP Info jako jedyna stacja przez 20 minut transmitowała jego
konferencję prasową. Gdyby nie skoki Adama Małysza w Planicy, Ganley
dostałby od TVP jeszcze tego samego dnia ekskluzywny wywiad w nowym
cyklu "Temat dnia" w prime time, tuż po "Teleexpressie".

"Temat dnia" spadł w piątek z ramówki, ale mimo to - jak nieoficjalnie
mówi się w TVP - Farfał kazał nagrać wywiad, aby był gotowy na
poniedziałek. Miała go przeprowadzić Hanna Lis. Odmówiła. Wtedy
poproszono Piotra Kraśkę. Zgodził się. Jak mówią dziennikarze
"Wiadomości" liczył, że do poniedziałku problem zniknie, a wywiad
wyląduje w koszu. Wczoraj wylądował na antenie "Jedynki".

Ganley z puszki

Wywiad nagrano w studiu "Wiadomości". Dopiero po kilkunastu sekundach
usunięto wczoraj spod znaczka TVP napis: "na żywo". Ganley jak zwykle
argumentował, że nie jest przeciwnikiem integracji europejskiej, ale
jego zdaniem traktat lizboński powoduje, że Europa przestaje być
demokratyczna i 80 procent decyzji będzie podejmowanych przez ludzi,
którzy nie są wybierani.

Kraśko usiłował kontrować wypowiedzi lidera Libertas, ale najczęściej
jego pytania były zbijane cytatami znanych europejskich polityków.

Decyzję o emisji wywiadu podjął Farfał, choć wiedział, że to oznacza
konflikt z "Wiadomościami". Kraśko już w piątek zapowiedział, że jeśli

Jego koledzy mówią, że poszło o zasady: - Ganley nie był tematem nr

Szef KRRiT Witold Kołodziejski (z rekomendacji PiS) jest oburzony
emisją wywiadu: - W najbliższych dniach podejmiemy w tej sprawie
kroki. Taka sytuacja nie ma prawa mieć miejsca w TVP, obojętnie, czy
chodzi o partię Libertas, czy jakąkolwiek inną - powiedział PAP. -
Obawiam się, że telewizja może być wykorzystywana do partykularnych
celów.

Co może zrobić KRRiT? Kołodziejski: - Mogę np. ukarać finansowo
prezesa telewizji.

Ustawa mówi, że może to być maksymalnie sześć miesięcznych pensji.
Kołodziejski nie reagował, gdy za poprzedniego prezesa Andrzeja
Urbańskiego w kampanii wyborczej na jesieni 2007 r. telewizja złamała
ramówkę. Na żywo transmitowała konferencję prasową szefa CBA, który
oskarżał o przyjęcie łapówki posłankę PO.

Giertych doradza Farfałowi?

- Ta sprawa pokazała, że promowanie Ganleya to dla Farfała dziś sprawa
pierwszorzędna - mówią dziennikarze "Wiadomości". - Prezes na antenie
telewizji publicznej realizuje partyjne cele swego środowiska
politycznego.

Farfał miejsce w zarządzie TVP zawdzięcza rekomendacji byłego prezesa
LPR Romana Giertycha. Ludzie Ligi dziś chcą się przytulić do Ganleya i
znaleźć miejsce na listach jego partii Libertas Polska. Dla nich to
jedyna szansa wejścia do Parlamentu Europejskiego - Ganley może
zapewnić im rozgłos i pieniądze.

Giertych w TVN 24 chwalił Farfała za to promowanie Ganleya. - Libertas
cieszy się jak najbardziej moim poparciem, bo powstrzymał wejście w
życie konstytucji europejskiej, niekorzystnej dla Polski.
Argumentacja, że Libertas nie powinna być prezentowana w mediach, jest
cenzurą.

Czy zatem za obecnością Ganleya na antenie TVP kryje się Giertych? W
TVN 24 przyznał, że ma związki, i z Farfałem, i z rada nadzorczą:
udziela im porad prawnych. Od razu zastrzegł, że "darmowych", i że nie
zamierza zostać prokurentem w zarządzie w TVP ani członkiem rady, ani
zarządu.

Tymczasem dwie osoby z rekomendacji LPR w radzie nadzorczej - jej szef
Łukasz Moczydłowski i zastępca Ireneusz Fryszkowski - twierdzą, że
nigdy żadnych porad prawnych u Giertycha nie zasięgali. - Ani w
imieniu rady, ani prywatnie.

The rightist politician from League of Polish Families like Daniel Pawlowiec was president of Libertas Poland. what will happen now? Is he going to step down or are they going to cut Ganley out and keep Libertas Poland going themselves. Though it is great to see the far right in fighting, it shows the false promise that is Libertas and demonstrates that they will associated with anti gay, anti Jewish and neo nazis in order to gain power in Europe.

Declan Ganley is keynote speaker at the launch of Poland’s referendum committee

Close to 500 people took part in an open meeting with Declan Ganley as keynote speaker in Warsaw on the 1st of February. Declan Ganley’s trip to Poland (his second this year) was welcomed with a standing ovation as he was announced by Daniel Pawlowiec as ‘the man who stopped the process of collapsing states’ sovereignties in Europe’.

‘This meeting is a very good message for Poland and for whole Europe. It is the only one way to secure our freedom and democracy in Europe. Our aim is: to reject the Treaty of Lisbon. Poland could be again, like many times in the history, the source of inspiration for other European countries’ – said Ganley to huge applause.

According to Ganley, voting for Libertas in the forthcoming European Parliament elections across Europe would be a strong European voice of opposition against establishment,
bureaucracy and the anti- democratic way of current governance of the EU.

After the speech several politicians from across the Polish political spectrum spoke of their support for future referenda. Speakers included including MEP Podkanski (leader of PSL Piast – Polish People's Party), Boleslaw Borysiuk, the leader of Regions Party, Miroslaw Orzechowski, former secretary of state, chairman of League of Polish Families, and Antoni Tyszka from Union for Realistic Politics (Unia Polityki Realnej).

All of the leaders signed the document of foundation the committee for a referendum on Lisbon Treaty.

The following day, Declan Ganley launched the Warsaw office of Libertas to the press. Daniel Pawlowiec, a former MP and Minister of EU affairs will head the office. Pawlowiec was one of the first people in Poland in public life who highlighted the threat of the Lisbon Treaty to Europe.

Libertas to cut links with controversial Polish political party

LIBERTAS IS reportedly distancing itself from the League of Polish Families (LPR), a key political ally in its European election campaign in Poland, after its leader was charged with drink driving.

The moved, confirmed by a Libertas official to Polish newspaper Rzeczpospolita, comes as the government in Warsaw announced a new Bill to reform Polish public television and remove its controversial director, an LPR member and former skinhead.

Libertas founder Declan Ganley appeared with members of the extreme-right, ultra-Catholic LPR at the launch of the Polish wing of the party to contest the June European elections. LPR politicians saw it as a chance to boost their dwindling political relevance two years after failing to make it into the Polish parliament.

But expectations of a revival in the fortunes of a party weakened by infighting and splits are dwindling further after its leader, Miroslaw Orzechowski, was charged with ramming two cars while drunk in Lodz earlier this month.

Police were called by the passengers of the other cars and Mr Orzechowski was found to be over the legal limit. “First he hit my car, then he also scratched the car that was standing near mine,” a witness told Polish television. “My wife hit her hand on the front of Mr Orzechowski’s car to make him stop.”

Mr Orzechowski admits drinking wine before the incident but denies he was driving his car. He later resigned as leader of LPR. He is a familiar face in the Polish media: as deputy education minister he questioned the theory of evolution and called for all homosexual teachers to be fired.

In a separate development, the centre-right government of Donald Tusk has moved to purge public broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP) of political appointees made by the last government, of which LPR was a junior partner.

A key target is TVP director Piotr Farfal, an LPR member and former editor of the anti-Semitic youth magazine Front. “We do not accept cowards, collaborators or Jews. We are the future!” he wrote in a now notorious article for the magazine headlined “Why Be a Skinhead?” Mr Farfal portrays his remarks as youthful indiscretions.

Last week, French-German public broadcaster Arte announced that it was cancelling its 15-year co-operation with TVP because, it said, Mr Farfal’s views were incompatible with Arte’s “philosophy based on intercultural exchange”.

A spokesperson for Libertas declined to comment on whether Libertas still had contacts with LPR members, saying only that it “has never allied itself with political parties in Poland”.
