This petty vicious infighting is typical of all of McGuirk's previous political messes.

UNSUCCESSFUL LIBERTAS candidate for Dublin Caroline Simons sent a legal letter to Declan Ganley’s spokesman the day after the European elections accusing the spokesman of defaming her.

Ms Simons’s complaint related to a press release issued to the media in her name describing an international Jewish organisation, the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, as “beneath contempt”.

The release was prompted by the Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s claim that some Libertas candidates around Europe were “known anti-Semites, homophobes and anti-migrant racists”.

Ms Simons’s letter to John McGuirk, seen by The Irish Times , was dated June 6th.

This was after Mr Ganley had announced Libertas would “ally itself” with the Wiesenthal Centre to fight anti-Semitism in the European Parliament and Libertas had issued a retraction of the original statement in Ms Simons’s name.

On June 1st, a statement from the Wiesenthal centre claimed “extremist” parties and individuals were “reportedly affiliated to the Libertas bloc, founded in 2006 by the Irish-based magnate, Declan Ganley, in order to combat the Lisbon Treaty on European integration”.

Referring to Libertas candidates across Europe, the Wiesenthal centre said: “Some of those standing are known anti-Semites, homophobes and anti-migrant racists.”

A responding statement issued by Libertas in Ms Simons’s name described the Wiesenthal centre as “beneath contempt”.

The statement said it had been only a matter of time before “the establishment got so desperate” that it resorted to calling Libertas Nazis. “The only surprise here is that we had to wait so long before they could find a willing idiot to come and say it.” The statement was dated June 2nd but released on the 3rd.

Later the same day, Mr Ganley announced that Libertas would “ally itself” with the centre “in a joint commitment to defend against, and actively fight, racism and anti-Semitism within the European Parliament and other European Institutions”.

Libertas’s press office said it later issued another statement saying the earlier release attributed to Ms Simons had been issued in error and had not been approved. Ms Simons told The Irish Times that “a number” of press releases were issued in her name without her knowledge during the recent campaign.

She said she sent an e-mail to media outlets on June 3rd, signed by Mr Ganley and herself, saying: “A statement was released earlier today by a member of the Irish Libertas staff which contained untruths.” Ms Simons said she sent an e-mail to the RTÉ newsdesk on June 6th, saying: “The release made by a Libertas staff member was made without Ms Simons’ knowledge or authority and comments ascribed to her were never said and are untrue.”

Mr McGuirk said yesterday: “I’m very disappointed that a candidate who didn’t perform particularly well in the election would choose to embarrass herself like this.”

The subsequent letter from Ms Simons’s solicitor to Mr McGuirk said the original statement issued on her behalf was defamatory.

Ms Simons’s solicitor had instructed Mr McGuirk to issue a new statement to the media outlets that had received the original release, saying Ms Simons was “in fact an ardent supporter” of the Wiesenthal centre and its causes

I have decided that it is in the public interest to publish a story

Dear Anita, I am holding publication while I consider your
offer, I feel that some parameters would be important to
agree in advance, such as length of interview and range of topics
that would be discussed. I have no interest in doing an interview where Declan Ganley merely covers the same ground that he has covered ad nauseam in the main stream media which I feel have not answered the questions raised by my blog in any way.

As Declan Ganley uses the media to deliver accusatory
soundbites without detailed elaboration I would expect the
opportunity to seek the detailed answers raised by his claims and assertions.


In the meantime , is there any clarification forthcoming on
the three people I have mentioned? Is Declan Ganley willing
to discuss my concerns fully and frankly and at the length
it may take to cover the ground I wish to cover?

Dear Anita , You are well aware that you failed to respond to me not
the other way around re an interview with Declan Ganley. Friday 10 April
I was informed that Declan had told interns in the office in Brussels ie your office that he had already secured a cease and desist order (did he mean injunction?) against me.
As a press representative you should at least try to keep up the pretence of veracity , though I know it is hard given the organisation you work for.

Libertas Dublin candidate's launch a farce as Irish Trade Union bars them using their Liberty Hall

Libertas Dublin launch for Caroline Simons was a farce tonight. The few people who attended were a Libertas rent a crowd but their numbers, nearly 55, hardly bode well for the anti abortionist's electoral chances. Declan Ganley's flag collection was raided for an Irish tricolour with a gold trim and an EU flag. Paranoid looking malcontents and misfits pacing the hotel foyer prior to the arrival of Simons included John McGuirk wearing brown shoes, jeans and a black jacket.
Like his leader Declan Ganley the Libertas males have poor colour coordination. Ganley has recently been sporting his beige jacket and pants with a blue shirt. Simons wearing a black ensemble looked her usual drab self.
The Ganley famiglia was represented by Declan's younger brother Sean Ganley, who was a founder of the Libertas think tank and formerly represented Ganley Group's Baghdad based Tigris Staffing in 2004.

Simon's was introduced by Raymond O'Malley, the former lobbyist for the Irish Farmer's Association and Libertas's candidate for Leinster.

The meeting was due to be held at the Services, Industrial, Professional, and Technical Union's Liberty Hall but Ireland's largest trade union refused to allow it to proceed on their premises having learning the true nature of the booking.

Journalists were little in evidence with only Harry McGee of the Irish Times and John McGuirks's pal Richard Waghorne of the Irish Daily Mail, a a solitary camera man from RTE News.

However billboard posters had appeared this afternoon in Dublin bearing Simon's face indicating another massive spending spree by Libertas. Who is funding this campaign? Not a grassroots as there was few in evidence this evening.
Free drink is currently being supplied to the attendees by Libertas.

Libertas Posters in Ireland outright Lies confirmed by Ganley on BBC . Libertas lies on Lisbon I confirmed by leading Irish jurist

In its latest dishonest poster campaign in Ireland Libertas are attempting to promote Declan Ganley as a politician by using pictures of real politicians and contrasting them with "self-made" Mr Ganley. The campaign which may be costing 50,000 Euro per week is based on slights of hand and mis-truths as usual.

During the Lisbon campaign Libertas billboards falsely stated that if people voted Yes to Lisbon Irish citizens would be conscripted into a EU army. Firstly there is and was no EU army, secondly there is no provision for conscription in the Lisbon Treaty and thirdly such an issue as conscription would be a solely Irish question to legislate for.

One of the current posters that Libertas are using in Ireland " juxtaposes a picture of Mr Cowen scratching his head with a smiling Mr Ganley. It contrasts job losses with Mr Ganley’s “record of job creation and success in business”.

However just this week on BBC Hardtalk Declan Ganley was pressed by Jonathan Dimbleby on how much business he does in Ireland and how many people he employs here.

Firstly Ganley tried to evade the question. However, when pressed he admitted that over 90% of his business was in the USA. He did not say where the other (up to)10% is . It is not in Ireland unless the Libertas Party Ltd. accounts for a $20 million turnover which would amount to 10% of $200 million defence contracts Ganley has with the US military.

Pressed on how many employees he had in Ireland Ganley was forced to admit that he only"had a team" in Ireland. In other words he employs a few people here like David Cochrane, who already has a job running Politics.ie, and John McGuirk who Ganley uses as press spokesman in Ireland.

The fact that Ganley is using such disingenuous posters in his bid to get elected to the European parliament should be a warning to both Irish and overseas voters. Ganley is banking on the power of expensive advertisement campaigns to con voters into accepting his morally corrupt distortion of the truth.

Is this the type of man that the people of Ireland's North West constituency want representing them in the EU at a time of particular economic difficulty or indeed any time?

What I find remarkable is that Ganley and Libertas, taking cynicism to a new level, they are fully aware that media outlets and bloggers will comment on the fact that their posters are misrepresentation's and lies yet they continue to adopt this type of ad campaign.

While this blogger has often compared Libertas publicity and statements to the campaigns designed by Dr. Goebbels to promote the Nazi party and state, this may be dismissed by some as the rantings of an anonymous blogger. I was therefore both heartened and also a little shocked this week to note that in a working draft of a polemic by a retired Irish Supreme Court judge, former European Court judge and one of the most respected jurists in the Europe, Donal Barrington, use the same analogy, comparing Libertas's billboard campaign for the Lisbon I referendum last year to those of Dr. Goebbels.

Be warned The Big Lie really is the modus operandi of Libertas and its pr team led by amongst others, John McGuirk, Anita Kelly, Lt Col Robin Matthews (British Army retired) and Joe Trippi.

Of course the buck stops with the man who provides the bucks and who the latest ads are designed to get elected, Declan Ganley. It would also appear that the Libertas campaign in Ireland is set to cost millions of Euros despite the fact that they have only announced two candidates.

Despite their claim to be the party of transparency Libertas have again failed to make public the sources of their funding and details of defence contractor Rivada Networks early funding. Rivada Networks offices, phones and paid employees David Cochrane and Naoise Nunn were all utilised to set up Libertas.

Libertas founder to fund Polish party through the back door?

Irish millionaire businessman Declan Ganley plans to take advantage of a loophole in Polish law that would allow him to fund the Polish branch of euroskeptic political party Libertas.

Polish law bans foreign financial funding in domestic politics, but Ganley appears to have found a way to bypass current legislation. The founder of Libertas and ardent euroskeptic proposes to act as a guarantor if Libertas Poland are unable to repay the bank loans issued to run the party.

The story broke in Saturday's edition of Dziennik and provoked outrage amongst politicians, who described the news as “scandalous.”

Zbigniew Chlebowski, PO's parliamentary club leader, called the news “unsettling” as, “a bank guarantee that gives a party money for elections can be given by a person that is prohibited by law to do so. This means to circumvent the existing rules,” he said.

Mr Chlebowski called for fast and decisive action in dealing with Mr Ganley's proposed funding, and expects advice from specialist lawyers to be available in the coming days.

Libertas refuses to go public on party funding

LIBERTAS last night supplied the State's ethics watchdog with a series of financial documents in a bid to provide "detailed answers" about its funding.

But the anti-Lisbon Treaty organisation will not be making public any copies of the bank statements or loan agreements, despite its own calls for greater political transparency.

Two weeks ago, the organisation failed to provide adequate information to the Standards in Public Office (Sipo) commission on where it got the money to fund its expensive campaign for a 'No' vote in the Lisbon Treaty referendum. It has since been accused of "not being willing to operate under the Law" by Fianna Fail.

Libertas last night submitted documents in relation to three key issues queried. Copies of a €200,000 loan agreement between Libertas chief Declan Ganley and the organisation were provided, after Sipo first wrote to it last June seeking details of any loans provided to the organisation for the referendum campaign.

Details of the thousands of books on the Lisbon Treaty supplied by the Foundation for European Democracy and distributed by Mr Ganley were also submitted.

Sipo had raised questions about whether these constituted a donation because the material could be deemed to be influencing the vote's outcome.

However, legal advisers for Libertas are said to have argued that the books do not constitute a donation because the material was neutral and simply relayed the contents of the Lisbon Treaty.

The third aspect of the submission covers the employees of Mr Ganley's Rivada company, who worked for Libertas in their spare time and on a voluntary basis. Sipo again questioned if the use of these employees constituted a donation. Documents provided seek to outline when staff worked for Rivada, then moved to Libertas.

Asked why the organisation had decided against making the documents public, a spokesman said: "Why would we make them public, spend weeks explaining the details and have the Opposition attacking the contents when they won't do the same thing. There's a need for fairness."

However the story is confirmed by several sources within Libertas Poland including one of its Vice Presidents Artur Zawisza who said "The most important thing for banks is to assess the creditworthiness and the collateral. I know they consulted with Mr. Declan Ganleyem" - when asked about the source of funding election campaigns.

Libertas denies Ganley is funding Polish campaign

LIBERTAS HAS denied reports that founder Declan Ganley will in effect personally bankroll the European election campaign of its newly founded Polish branch by guaranteeing bank loans for the party.

The Polish daily Dziennik at the weekend reported assertions from a Libertas Polska party source that the party hoped to raise a loan of €250,000 on the basis of guarantees from Mr Ganley.

Such a loan guarantee, although legal, would effectively circumvent Polish legislation that bans foreign funding of Polish domestic politics, and the suggestion has prompted a heated reaction in the country.

Libertas spokesman John McGuirk insisted yesterday, however, that Mr Ganley was not giving such guarantees. “ was asked a hypothetical question and he gave an answer he shouldn’t have,” said Mr McGuirk. “He answered it in a stupid manner, to be honest.”

Dziennik stood by its story yesterday, citing confirmation of the plan from several sources within the party.

Libertas insists it is financing its campaign to field candidates EU-wide in the June European elections through donations and fundraising.

History has left Poles acutely sensitive to foreign influence on domestic politics and the Libertas report has prompted concern that it could set a dangerous precedent in Polish politics.

“Today it’s Irish money, tomorrow will it be Russian money?” asked Dziennik opinion editor Michal Karnowksi.

“It’s a trick to get the money they cannot accept directly from abroad. It was obvious that Libertas Polska had no money of their own and that Ganley was going to give money, the question until now was just how he was going to do it.”

The Polish election commission, which can examine party financing only in the aftermath of an election, has, however, said campaign loans guaranteed by non-Polish citizens are legitimate. Leading figures in Poland’s ruling Civic Platform (PO) party called it “unsettling” for a party to “get money for elections from a person prohibited by law to do so”.

“This means to circumvent the existing rules,” said Zbigniew Chlebowski, PO parliamentary leader.

Dziennik claims that Libertas Polska will have access to €250,000, as will the Libertas party in Slovakia.

Libertas in Latvia, the newspaper claimed, would have funding of €100,000.

Mr Ganley says Libertas drew down €200,000 during last year’s Lisbon campaign in Ireland from a credit facility he put in place. Declan Ganley will finance the anti-Lisbon campaign in Poland. His allies, who have no money, claim he will guarantee their loan and repay if himself after the election.

As "Gazeta Wyborcza" reports, the Libertas crowd in Poland have found a legal loophole to get financing from abroad. Daniel Pawłowiec, one of the Polish Libertas activists told "Gazeta" Mr. Ganley will guarantee a loan they will take. Another anonymous activist told "Dziennik" daily that the loan would be repaid by Mr. Ganley after the election.

Right-wing parties rally under Libertas banner

JOY IS not an emotion one usually associates with Viscount Philippe de Villiers, the right-wing French politician who has built his career on fear-mongering over the influx of Muslim immigrants and opposition to what he calls the “oligarchs and commissars” of Brussels.

But “joy” was the word Mr de Villiers used to describe the launching of a joint European parliamentary election campaign uniting his Movement for France (MPF) and Frédéric Nihous’s Hunting, Fishing, Nature and Tradition (CPNT) party under the Libertas.eu banner yesterday.

Libertas founder Declan Ganley, whom Mr de Villiers called “our hero”, proudly watched over the ceremony.

Mr de Villiers delivered a romantic version of Mr Ganley’s alleged heroism. “They fobbed a repeat of the constitution on us, and one man rose up, an Irish businessman who won the support of the people.”

Mr de Villiers’s tone veered into sarcasm, his speciality. The good people of Ireland were in for a surprise, he said. “When people vote No, they must be forced to vote again.”

Hence the importance of June’s European elections. Since 26 EU countries were deprived of a vote on Lisbon, “this European election must replace the referendum people didn’t have”.

Mr de Villiers mingled grievances against Europe and President Nicolas Sarkozy. Europe “must draw its borders, once and for all, without Turkey”, he said. He complained that Mr Sarkozy has allowed negotiations on Turkish accession to proceed on 10 of 35 chapters. And Mr Sarkozy did away with a constitutional provision requiring a French referendum on Turkish accession.

Then it was time for a tirade against “the crazy madmen who continue stealing people’s identity and traditions”. Europe was preparing regulations that would make rosé wine by mixing red and white, Mr de Villiers claimed. And Europe wanted to impose health warnings on camembert cheese! Standing beside Mr Ganley, champion of free markets, Mr de Villiers the protectionist pleaded for “European preference, so that Europe can fight outsourcing and the transfer of our means of production to China”.

Still standing beside Mr Ganley, the defence contractor who has just named four former senior defence officials from the US and Britain to the board of his company, Mr de Villiers condemned Mr Sarkozy’s announcement yesterday that he is bringing France back into the integrated military command of Nato. “The return to Nato is the end of the independence of France. It is the end of the very idea of European defence.”

Mr Ganley took the floor, calling France “the beating heart of Europe”. But where Mr de Villiers voiced grievances, Mr Ganley incited them.

If the Lisbon Treaty is ratified, he said, there will never be another referendum.

“The small little bit of power you have will be taken away from you!” Mr Ganley harangued the small crowd of journalists as if they were supporters at a rally. “These elites in Brussels have silenced the French people. They ignored you completely! They point at the people of France and the Netherlands and Ireland and they say, ‘There is something wrong with you. You are ignorant. You are not European.’”

It was time for people to “tell the elites in Brussels, ‘No. There is something wrong with you.’”

Paul-Marie Coûteaux, one of three MEPs elected on Mr de Villiers’s list five years ago, created a storm by denouncing the party’s alliance with Mr Ganley on the eve of the launch.

Mr Coûteaux accused Mr Ganley of supporting the election of a president of Europe by universal suffrage, Turkish accession to the EU and Nato membership for all European states.

Mr Ganley confounded several sources who had the strong impression that he supported Turkey’s EU application and Nato.

“I completely agree on Turkey,” he said. “On the matter of Nato, this is a decision that must be made at member-state level. Ireland is neutral.”

(In an article he published in the US in 2003, Mr Ganley attacked the constitutional treaty on the grounds it would damage the traditional defence relationship between Europe and the US.)

So how much was Libertas contributing to Mr de Villiers’s and Mr Nihous’s European campaigns? “Not one centime!” he protested, denouncing “unhealthy, malignant rumours” and “calumny”. “Not a sou!” added Mr Nihous. When I asked Mr Ganley whether Libertas had offered Swedish party Junilistan €900,000 to campaign under his party’s name, he answered with a sharp “No” and walked away.

Libertas statement clash again on 1 mil payment offer

Though one Libertas spokesman John McGuirk admitted that talks regarding 1 million euro did take place another Libertas spokeperson Anita Kelly says that they did not offer cash. McGuirk's statement came two days after kelly's and is the latest from Libertas. Sören Wibe critised the "foreign billionaire." who he says wants an EU army. This is ironic as Ganley and Libertas used the false claim that Lisbon ratification would lead to conscription in Ireland in their campaign to stop the ratification of the treaty in Ireland. Here

The Irish nejpartiet Libertas set up in Sweden's EU elections. But the party accused of having tried to buy the winner of the last parliamentary elections, Junilistan.

They tried to buy us for 10 million, if we called ourselves the Junilistan-Libertas. But we rejected it, "says Sören Wibe, which tops the list ballot paper at the June European elections in June.

Libertas is a party created by the Irish businessman Declan Ganley, who led nejsidan to victory in Ireland's referendum on the Lisbon Treaty last year. He wants to start lots in all 27 EU countries to stand in parliamentary elections.

Election approved Libertas Sweden since they got together the 1 500 names required. En av One of the June List's founder, Jesper Katz, stands as the official partibildare. . Katz would not comment on the allegations, but Libertas spokesperson Anita Kelly denies that it offered money.

Junilistan received in European elections in 2004 supported by finance, but Sören Wibe says they do not receive money from any "foreign billionaire."

Libertas and Irish minister discuss the Libertas attempt to bribe Swedish party with 1 million euro

John McGuirk said of Libertas' reported attempt to bribe a a party in Sweden to support Libertas was "Normal and not unusual " on Ireland's Newstalk106 Lunchtime show.
He agreed that Libertas representitives met with June List and that money was"of course" discussed. He further admitted that the figure of one million was likely to have been discussed by Jasper Katz of Libertas with the June List.

Irish minister for European Affiars Dick Roche replied " I am falling around the room laughing" (at that explaination)He continued: "Libertas is a scam.....................hovering up money." On McGuirk's statements he said "We are not going to get the truth from them (Libertas) today". he said that the attempt by Libertas "to buy over a political party with 3 MEPs was unprecedented in the European Union".

The issue of Libertas' use of MPs names against their permission in order to recieve EU funding was also discussed. Roche said that the whole affair needed to be investigated for fraud as it was one of several bizarre aand unprecendented incidents which showed the true nature of Libertas. The minister implied that the public will never get the truth from Libertas on these affairs. he made particular reference to Libertas' use of signitures without permission or consent in an attempt to get 200,000 euro from the EU.

McGuirk said "those guys signed the application for funding. "


This is a lie. The documents posted on the Libertas website are not applications for funding they appear to be membership application forms for Libertas. The circumstances which these signitures were obtained are also very murky and need to be investigated.

Libertas Has No Time for Workers' Rights! Interns low wages raise concerns

Concern has been expressed by Catherine Halloran, Political Correspondent with the tabloid Irish Daily Star that Libertas have no regard for workers rights. She is outraged and warns studdents to beware of Libertas. However she got her sums wrong. The hourly rate for working 40 hours a week at €700 a month is only €4.03. This is even lower than the rate of 4.30 which halloran thinks is a violation of workers rights.

If there is one thing guaranteed to bore the cotton socks off anyone at the moment, it is the mere mention of the Lisbon Treaty - but bear with me!

Workers rights was one of the main issues of contention last June when the Irish turned remarkably frosty towards anything European.

But Declan Ganley's anti-treaty group Libertas really are taking the biscuit when it comes to workers rights - it is looking for interns but is only prepared to pay them a misery €700 a month while they live in Brussels.

Ganley's Libertas is building a European army of interns ahead of this summer's European elections.

And as part of its plan for world domination, it will be taking on interns and full-time staff across Europe.

In their online advertisement they are looking to hire 'highly-qualified and talented students for a period of five months in Brussels'.

But let's look at this more closely. Considering the intern will work at least eight hours a day for five days a week, that gives a working week of 40 hours. With four weeks in a month, that gives the sum total of 160 hours a month.

With a pay packet of €700 a month, that gives an hourly rate of just €4.30 - far, far less than the Minimum Wage.

I recommend that you watch the video. It runs to 2 hours 49 min but it is a unique opportunity to see Declan Ganley in action. At about 11min in Ganley seems to become antagonist and pushy. he continues that way. His partner in Libertas Caroline Simons is also featured as is the Libertas Ireland communications director John McGuirk whose huge form occupies the seat beside Ganley's.
The overall impression left is that Ganley has very little to say. However there is a nasty impression given by the three Libertas representatives. Watch it and let me know what you think.
