Irish Libertas wants to dispose of Poles while tens of thousands of Irish living and working in other EU countries would have to return home.

Libertas are discovering that in the media age racist issues raised in one country on Friday are quickly reported in others . Today's Gazeta Wyborcza has a blistering article pointing out the stupid racist notions of Libertas that would also mean that

Instead of the freedom of working Libertasu candidates would like to introduce a "blue card" which will allow EU citizens to work in their country not for two years, but without access to unemployment benefits and other social assistance.

Candidates from other party immediately criticized Libertas, noting that in the event of the introduction of such rules (Libertas's Blue Card scheme), tens of thousands of Irish living and working in other EU countries would have to return home.

Even more bizarrely Libertas state that Irish citizens will be required to get a Blue Card /work permit to work in Northern Ireland if they are from the south and vis a versa.

I'm not twisting anything. Simmons said the proposal would apply "across the board", including to Irish people in Britain:

Caroline Simmons: "We have proposed...a Blue Card system for all EU citizens...".

Matt Cooper: "Would this apply to Irish people...who go to England?"

Caroline Simmons: "Yes..."

Question: "Would someone coming from Newry to work in Dundalk have to apply [for a Blue Card]?"

Caroline Simmons: "...Well if you're going to apply it, you've got to apply it across the board...".

So Simmons has said that it would apply to all EU citizens, including Irish people going to live and work in Britain, and including people from Northern Ireland coming to live and work in the Republic.

That'll really play well in the North West especially!

It is interesting that on Libertas candidate in the UK fought in Northern Ireland in the British Army during the troubles, and Libertas Uk is run by a recently retired British Officer Robin Matthews.

Raymond O'Malley the Libertas candidate for Ireland east also wants to halt all immigration to Ireland. Denying Irish people freedom of movement is a new innovation in the \Libertas program for a Nationalist xenophobic racist Europe.

Irish Labour MEP says Libertas are a " fascist party"

Readers of this blog will know that they heard it here first but Proinsias de Rossa has stated that Libertas are a fascist party after Caroline Simons unveiled Libertas plans to restrict European right to travel and work in other EU countries. Mr de Rossa has recently been attacked by Simons because he of his age.

De Rossa also correctly noted that if Libertas's policy was introduced te

Not only are Libertas a far right party they are obviously on lunatics as well. Polling at only 1% in an Irish Times poll Simons and Libertas have now decided to play the race card in their cynical and dangerous bid to garner support.

Libertas accused of being 'fascist' over migrant plan

IMMIGRATION ROW: LIBERTAS HAS been accused of being “fascist” and of playing the “immigration card” with its plans to impose a two-year limit on migration into Ireland from other European states and a ban on immigrants claiming benefits here.

The party’s Dublin candidate, Caroline Simons, said yesterday that the immigration issue was the “elephant in the room” in the European election campaign.

She said that Libertas was calling for the adoption of a “blue card” throughout the European Union that would allow a citizen of the EU to live in another member state for up to two years as a guest worker as long as they were not a burden on the receiving state.

“This would mean that guest workers from EU member states would no longer be entitled to dole, rent subsidy, or any other state handout. Health and other social benefits would remain a matter for the member state from which the citizen originated,” she said. She said that migrants who require access to schools or other essential social services could apply for them on the same basis as now. If an immigrant lost their job, they would no longer be entitled to remain in the State once the blue card expired. Those in employment could apply for a new blue card after two years.

Describing the approach as one of “common sense”, she said Libertas believed in regulated economic migration in the 27 member states. However, she said the burden placed on Ireland and other EU states was unfair.

She claimed 29,000 new PPS numbers had been issued in Ireland this year to EU nationals when there were 400,000 unemployed people in Ireland.

“The Libertas plan would ensure that these people would come here only to work, study, or explore Ireland. We must reduce the burden to Ireland of caring for inhabitants of other member states and this plan is an equitable and fair way of doing it,” she said.

Her comments followed similar comments on Thursday by Libertas East candidate Raymond O’Malley, who said the time had come to stop the tide of workers coming from accession states.

In relation to asylum seekers from outside the EU, she said that if the Dublin Convention was enforced, Ireland would have fewer asylum seekers. Under the convention, an asylum seeker must be processed in the first State at which they arrive. She said there “was no direct flight from Lagos to Dublin”.

Labour’s Dublin MEP Proinsias de Rossa said he expected nothing else from Libertas which he accused of being a “fascist party”. He said: “They are aligned with all the far-right parties across Europe. It is divisive politics that these parties are involved in. If this system was implemented, tens of thousands of Irish people living and working across the EU would have to be sent home.

Fianna Fáil’s candidate in East Thomas Byrne said the policy was ludicrous. “Immigration is a complex issue and to reduce it to an electoral soundbite is dangerous,” he told Today FM.

Ganley on 9% in Irish Times poll

Declan Ganley is on 9% according to a poll that will be published in tomorrow's Irish Times. This will not be enough to get a seat in the North West constituency. Neither of the other two Libertas candidate the racists Raymond O'Malley and the anti abortion candidate Caroline Simons are not in the running in Dublin at only 1% and the East constituency.

Despite spending millions of Euros Libertas ahve failed to convince Irish voters to accept their far right agenda. Declan Ganley has said he will not pursue a campaign against the second Lisbon referendum if he fails to get elected.

Libertas candidate approves pan European taxation

At a meeting organised by Friends of the Earth last night in Dublin , Caroline Simons said she approved of an EU-wide carbon tax. This despite the fact that the party supports the notions of Vaclav Klaus that environmentalism stands in the way of industry and is a violation of human rights. What do Libertas really believe?
Caroline had also invested in a new wardrobe though she was wearing a pair of black pants she had ditched he ususal all black nun look in favour of a tan over coat.

As the meeting drew to a close a person in the audience stated he would not speak to Caroline Simons directly and instead asked Proinsias de Rossa how he could share a platform with Simons as her party were running a candidate in Poland who stated that Auschwitz was a labour camp not an extermination camp.

Carbon tax 'will not be ringfenced'

A PLANNED carbon tax set out in the programme for government will not be introduced as intended, Green Party candidate for Dublin Senator Deirdre de Búrca has said.

Rather than being ringfenced for such problems as fuel poverty, it would simply supplement the exchequer, Ms de Búrca told a public debate of Dublin European candidates last night.

The EU’s role in the forthcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen was the main issue discussed at the environmental debate.

Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald said the economic challenges should not be used as an excuse to row back on environmental commitments.

Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell said the EU should have one voice to lead on the issue and the only way to do this was by passing the Lisbon Treaty.

Labour MEP Proinsias de Rossa said the EU should get a binding global deal that did not impoverish the already poor in the EU and rest of the world.

Former Green MEP and Independent candidate Patricia McKenna said the target for a reduction in carbon emissions was far too soft.

As economies contracted, their emissions would naturally fall by 30 per cent so targets needed to be revised, she said.

When asked about an EU-wide carbon tax, Libertas candidate Caroline Simons said it was a good idea as the polluter would pay. Mr De Rossa later quipped that he was pleased to see that she supported the idea of EU involvement in tax. But she responded that such a scheme would depend on agreement by individual states.

Where do you get the cash Libertas. Eventually under intense questioning she said she would spend the legally allowed 200,000 to 250,000 and that she was getting donations from "around the country".
Can one person who has given money to Simon's please let me know.............

Caroline really messed up again when she said Roman Herzog had been the "prime minister" of Germany. Eh NO Caroline try Wikipedia your party edit it enough Germany has Presidents not prime minsters.

When she brought up the Lisbon Treaty she was completely nutty.

She said that Ireland had been "given a constitution in the early part of the last century" and this was "fine". Does she mean that we should return to the 1922 Anglo Irish Treaty that ended the Irish War of Independence and led to the Civil war 1922-23?
Does she mean that we should replace the Lisbon Treaty and Ireland's two subsequent constitution's? The 1937 abolished the Irish Free State and links with constitutional links with the United Kingdom the 1948 constitution and created the modern Irish Republic? Libertas are pushing a nutty idea.
It would seem that Libertas want Ireland to return to being called the Irish Free State and that our elected representatives would swear allegiance to the British royal family. This would tie in with Ganley's own love for the British military and their personnel who he has employed to run Libertas in Northern Ireland.

At the end of the show Simon's came out in favour of tightening up Ireland's immigration laws and seemed to be crestfallen that the country can't close its doors to EU citizens. The more Libertas are forced to answer questions the more far right their stance is shown to be.

Dear Anita, I am holding publication while I consider your
offer, I feel that some parameters would be important to
agree in advance, such as length of interview and range of topics
that would be discussed. I have no interest in doing an interview where Declan Ganley merely covers the same ground that he has covered ad nauseam in the main stream media which I feel have not answered the questions raised by my blog in any way.

As Declan Ganley uses the media to deliver accusatory
soundbites without detailed elaboration I would expect the
opportunity to seek the detailed answers raised by his claims and assertions.


In the meantime , is there any clarification forthcoming on
the three people I have mentioned? Is Declan Ganley willing
to discuss my concerns fully and frankly and at the length
it may take to cover the ground I wish to cover?

Dear Anita , You are well aware that you failed to respond to me not
the other way around re an interview with Declan Ganley. Friday 10 April
I was informed that Declan had told interns in the office in Brussels ie your office that he had already secured a cease and desist order (did he mean injunction?) against me.
As a press representative you should at least try to keep up the pretence of veracity , though I know it is hard given the organisation you work for.

Libertas lawyer cites Wikipedia in smear on MEP while Ganley/Libertas staff in Tuam edit his own Wikipedia page

Libertas use Wikipedia in attempt to smear an MEP on the radio in Ireland yesterday. An article in today's Evening Herald notes that Green party candidate Deirdre de Burca explained to Caroline Simons the Libertas anti abortion candidate that anyone can change a Wikipedia page but hey they know that this week they have been removing info from Declan Ganley's own Wikipedia page.

An IP address registered to a resident of Tuam Co. Galway has been editing the Wikipedia page on Declan Ganley this week removing words like Eurosceptic, and references to the Irish Times articles that cites Ganley's parties advocacy of strikebreaking in the Libertas memorandum of association.
other than Ganley's wiki article the only other pages on Wikipedia edited by that IP are

In my statcounter I have it self-listed merely as Ganley but of course it is as likely to be Rivada staff and/or Libertas people as they all use the same phone line . I would not have revealed the fact that they log on so much but the fact that they use the same IP to edit Ganley's Wikipedia page make it a matter of public interest to reveal this fact.

LIBERTAS is embroiled in a political row after its Dublin candidate used internet site Wikipedia as a source on live radio.

Caroline Simons repeatedly used the site to back up controversial claims about a Green Party representative in the European Parliament.

In a debate with Green candidate Deirdre de Burca, the solicitor denied that Libertas was in bed with the "looney far right" and said: "I think it's hilarious to hear Deirdre talk about that when one of the most prominent Green people in the European Parliament is her own favourite Daniel Cohn-Bendit."

She went on to allege that Mr Cohn-Bendit was "a student rioter and all the rest" who talked "about very inappropriate behaviour with children when he was working in a kindergarten".

However, when Ms de Burca took issue with the statement, she was told by the Libertas candidate: "You can check Wikipedia and check his autobiography."

Pressured by radio host Pat Kenny, Simons repeated: "You can check Wikipedia."

But as Ms Simons attempted to defend her claims, the presenter said: "No Caroline, I'm sorry, let me explain, Wikipedia is something that can be amended by anybody, so I can never allow that to be used as a definitive source."

Speaking like a school teacher, Pat continued: "Often it's a useful starting point if you want to find out about people, but I would not use that as my Bible."

Eventually, Ms Simons replied: "Well, absolutely, absolutely."

Afterwards, Senator de Burca told the Herald that the Libertas candidate showed "a lack of political experience".

Ms Simons launched her first electoral campaign just this week and is hoping to win an MEP seat for the controversial party in Dublin.

She is a solicitor based in Ballsbridge and worked with Libertas during its campaign against the Lisbon Treaty.

But she faces her first personal political controversy as Ms de Burca is outraged by the comments about Mr Cohn-Bendit.

Libertas Dublin candidate's launch a farce as Irish Trade Union bars them using their Liberty Hall

Libertas Dublin launch for Caroline Simons was a farce tonight. The few people who attended were a Libertas rent a crowd but their numbers, nearly 55, hardly bode well for the anti abortionist's electoral chances. Declan Ganley's flag collection was raided for an Irish tricolour with a gold trim and an EU flag. Paranoid looking malcontents and misfits pacing the hotel foyer prior to the arrival of Simons included John McGuirk wearing brown shoes, jeans and a black jacket.
Like his leader Declan Ganley the Libertas males have poor colour coordination. Ganley has recently been sporting his beige jacket and pants with a blue shirt. Simons wearing a black ensemble looked her usual drab self.
The Ganley famiglia was represented by Declan's younger brother Sean Ganley, who was a founder of the Libertas think tank and formerly represented Ganley Group's Baghdad based Tigris Staffing in 2004.

Simon's was introduced by Raymond O'Malley, the former lobbyist for the Irish Farmer's Association and Libertas's candidate for Leinster.

The meeting was due to be held at the Services, Industrial, Professional, and Technical Union's Liberty Hall but Ireland's largest trade union refused to allow it to proceed on their premises having learning the true nature of the booking.

Journalists were little in evidence with only Harry McGee of the Irish Times and John McGuirks's pal Richard Waghorne of the Irish Daily Mail, a a solitary camera man from RTE News.

However billboard posters had appeared this afternoon in Dublin bearing Simon's face indicating another massive spending spree by Libertas. Who is funding this campaign? Not a grassroots as there was few in evidence this evening.
Free drink is currently being supplied to the attendees by Libertas.

“SIPTU have informed Libertas that Caroline Simons is not welcome to launch her campaign in Liberty Hall this evening, despite the fact that the venue had been booked for some weeks. As a consequence, the event will now take place in Wynne’s Hotel, Abbey St. Lower, at 6.30pm, followed by a reception.

This extraordinary and last-minute u-turn by the authorities at Liberty Hall raises very interesting questions. Caroline Simons spent a large portion of her career working with the trade union movement to secure equality for women. She has been an articulate and hard working defender of worker’s rights. She adopted the same position on the Lisbon Treaty as an overwhelming majority of Trade Union members.

SIPTU’s decision this evening should leave working people in no doubt that SIPTU, rather than representing the interests of its members, is primarily concerned with doing the bidding of its political masters”

Lisbon 2 campaign begins with dishonest leaflets at Giscard D’Estaing talk

The Lisbon 2 campaign was launched on Thursday 12 Febuary in Dublin at a debate at Trinity College between Valéry Giscard D’Estaing and among others Libertas's Caroline Simons. One leaflet distribted ion the night included the same smear that Libertas employed during the Lisbon 1 referendum campaign over which D'Estaing branded Ganley dishonest only

On Thursday last Valéry Giscard D’Estaing, who played a key role during Ireland’s Lisbon Treaty referendum last year, debated with anti-treaty advocates in Dublin . He became a key figure during the campaign after Libertas quoted him as saying that the treaty meant that “public opinion will be led to adopt, without knowing it, the proposals we dare not present to them directly”.

The quotation was taken from an interview carried in French newspaper Le Monde but the next paragraph made clear that he believed that such an approach would be “unworthy” and only confirm European citizens “in the idea that the construction of Europe is organised behind their backs by lawyers and diplomats”.

Following the referendum campaign, Mr Giscard, who was a controversial figure during the work of the EU convention and strongly in favour of greater EU federalism, denounced Libertas founder Declan Ganley, claiming that he had deliberately misquoted him in a “dishonest” way. here

A woman was ejected by Trinity College security from Thursday debate for circulating the below leaflet which uses the same quote from Le Monde which D'Estaing denounced Declan Ganley, for using to misquote him in a “dishonest” way. the leaflet declares that the EU is anti Democratic. Read it here

This leaflet gives a web link to a very similar web address as leaflet one above www.wethe people.ie registered to a Harry O'Reilly registered also this January. The leaflet states that RFID (Radio frequecy ID cjips) are already inserted into Euro notes. It also states"
We have little time to sink Lisbon 2 and stop our kids from being chipped like cattle".

It also contains links to COIR an anti abortion group that it is strongly suggested were used by Libertas to campaign in the Lisbon referndum in Ireland. In November they accused Irish parliamentarians of treason here

Is this the start of Libertas's European campaign? These two recently created websites are spreading information and disinformation including the D'Estaing quote that Declan Ganley used dishonestly and out of context according toD'Estaing quote.

Another ruse that is employed is the availability of a downloadable version of this leaflet for people to print at home. The leaflet distributed at TCD on Thursday was professionally printed and guillotined/cropped. Though this was obvious I have been delayed making this post as I wished to have a professional printer concur with this view which he did on inspection of the leaflet.

Who is funding this campaign? Is it part of Libertas's campaign? They will deny this of course.

Ireland's Standards in Public Office should investigate these leaflets.

No Free Lunch:Ganley's Irish Independent hack Bruce Arnold attempts to divert from Libertas' disarray with accusations of smears.

Libertas Lackey Bruce Arnold has claimed that there is a smear campaign against Declan Ganley which seems to involve everyone who has ever spoken out against him or Libertas. Arnold was a guest at the Ganley organised dinner in honour of Czech Eurosceptic President Vaclav Klaus. (Full guest list at bottom of post). This dinner was Ganley's attempt to show himself as a regal and real player and was a deliberate attempt by him in collaboration with a state visitor who came at Irish taxpayers expense to embarrass the Irish government . Ganley stage managed the event to turn the Lisbon No vote into his own personal mandate. However the dinner was seen as a deliberate insult to the Irish people as Klaus was their guest.

Arnold asks questions in his piece about Ganley's eastern activities. He does not answer them. When he next dines with Mr. Ganley could he please find out the truth behind Ganley's Anglo Adriatic Investment Company and publish that? If Declan Ganley answered questions more forthrightly, then the confusion about his past and his current program would be resolved for once and for all. Arnold does not refer to the personal vendetta that Ganley and Libertas are waging against Minister for European Affairs Dick Roche. Their website host two recent attacks on him from Ganley while Arnold's article is yet another attempt at the same. Ganley is still smarting from being caught out over his claim his nationality was listed as British on his company returns due to a mistake "box filling". Roche pointed out on live radio that they were handwritten.



While Arnold presents Ganley as a victim anyone who watched the Primetime show on Ganley may take a different view. Arnold cannot ignore the contradictions between Ganley's statements and those of other people featured. Especially moving was the old pensioner who had lost his savings in Ganley International's Anglo Adriatic Investment Fund.

'Dick Roche is still looking. He has found nothing'

Declan Ganley was the most successful Irish politician of 2008. He won the Lisbon Treaty referendum, throwing the Government and opposition into chaotic confusion. He did this democratically. This irritated the losers, particularly Dick Roche. As Minister for Europe, Roche was significantly at fault for the defeat. He was well-versed in EU Lisbon Treaty intricacies, so this was inexcusable.

The campaign points made by Ganley throughout 2008 have been consistently ignored; instead, personal attacks have been launched. Among actions taken was an unbalanced, ill-researched and, in my view, malicious 'Prime Time' programme. The 'Irish Times' has published exclusively negative stories. There have been 'Village' magazine attacks, the latest of these provoking legal action by Ganley, now partly resolved.

Dick Roche was a significant contributor in 'Village' magazine, quoted as saying: "Declan Ganley is a liar, a self-employed mythologiser, a snake oil salesman".

Two smears have been applied, the first the US Funding Smear, the second an Irish Funding Smear. These have been conflated by the European Parliament's smear, where MEPs have used flimsy allegations and employed dubious procedures. Evidence in favour of Ganley has been ignored, as have his fundamental rights.

Democracy is undermined when public institutions are used in the ways adopted by Irish ministers and European parliamentarians.

RTE's 'Prime Time' programme, on November 27, 2008, was supposedly a profile of Ganley. The Sunday Independent said the programme was "an artful hatchet job, a televised internet conspiracy theory that hoovered up a fair chunk of the licence fee. RTE set out to throw mud, not to shed light, an approach that is the antithesis of public service broadcasting".

This was evident when Miriam O'Callaghan described Ganley as an enigma, asking whether his "incredible life story actually stacked up". She said there were more questions than answers, then delivered further questions,and answered none of them -- 'If [Libertas] isn't a front for spooks, is it a tool for the neo-cons?'; 'Was Ganley linked to Russian organised criminals in his early business dealings?' No answers came.

'Was public money used for this mud-slinging against Mr. Ganley?'; 'Who was behind this?'; 'What are the implications for the future?'

Lucinda Creighton alleged that Ulick McEvaddy and Ganley, whom McEvaddy supports, sought to derail political union in the EU out of self-interest connected with business dealings and their US paymasters, supposedly opposed to EU integration. No evidence has come out supporting this.

Lucinda Creighton criticised McEvaddy's description of the Lisbon Treaty as "unintelligible drivel".

She said: "There is no way this Libertas money is coming from donations." Further smears came from Fine Gael MEP Gay Mitchell. He asked rhetorically: "Are they getting it from the CIA, the UK Independence Party or their friends in the US military?" He offered no evidence. Stories on Libertas's compliance with electoral laws ran in Irish newspapers last September. Ganley replied on RTE radio that he had made a loan of €200,000 to Libertas. He stated that the money had not come from US government sources.

Environment Minister JohnGormley made a statement that Libertas acted lawfully under funding rules. Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny called for changes in electoral law. The papers reported the content of Mr Ganley's radio interview the day before. There were further questions about Libertas funding legality.

Smearing shifted to the European Parliament, where Daniel Cohn-Bendit revealed " ... a link between those who funded the 'No' campaign in Ireland and the Washington Pentagon and the CIA". He took this from Irish newspapers.

Cohn-Bendit claimed Ganley had concluded military procurement contracts with the Pentagon worth about $200m.

He said: "We must continue to keep close tabs on these things, and the facts must be put on the table. We cannot allow Europe to be damaged by people who demand transparency but are not prepared to play by the same rules themselves." This was greeted with applause.

Cohn-Bendit said Dick Roche had "made it his personal responsibility to investigate these matters. I warmly encourage his systematic pursuit of the truth". Dick Roche is still looking. He has found nothing.

The allegation that Libertas accepted CIA funding is a criminal allegation and the parliament's use of press reports for a criminal allegation is disproportionate. Mr Ganley's rights have vanished.

The truth is, Ganley won. The others lost. The Government made a mess of the campaign.

While Cowen and Roche fumbled their way towards defeat, Ganley focused on what was wrong with the European Union. He mounted an unwavering campaign. He led the 'No' vote groups in a detached way, making no alliances, dismissing ideas that were central to other 'No' voters.

The Cowen-led government then made an extraordinary mistake, indicating they would seek to reverse the decision. Brian Cowen advised Gordon Brown to ratify the Lisbon Treaty. This approach, relayed to Europe, was supported by Martin.

'No' vote activity might have declined, with the Government achieving their objectives in a subtle way. Instead we had angry confrontation. Motivation for trying again should have come from Europe, with a reluctant Dublin Government sticking with the democratic choice. Hearts and minds would have changed. Instead, the Dublin Government led the charge, insulting 'No' voters, siding with defeated.

This astonished Europe. The French presidency responded warmly, Nicolas Sarkozy visiting Dublin to seek the second referendum. This move had further negative effects. Sarkozy's new form of EU democracy was what Declan Ganley's Libertas opposed.

There was a campaign against Ganley's political credibility. The allegations to destroy him have not been established. From the start they served a political purpose, to divert responsibility for the Irish 'No' vote into stories about political funding.

What Ganley has said on Europe's democracy is never reported. The December Summit dealt with peripheral matters, ignoring his criticisms. This lack of fairness and balance is reprehensible. We should be ashamed of ourselves.

Declan Ganley "Christ's Ambassador"?

In the same issue of the Irish Times that features a tale of Ganley trying to silence yet another press outlet that has criticised him Declan Ganley states that "Christ calls us to be ambassadors".
While this blog advocates religious freedom and freedom from persecution the question must be asked........... Is Libertas a holy crusade? Is it a moral crusade? The party has still failed to provide a program or a manifesto. In the meantime we have only Ganley's comments to go on.

Ganley urges public figures over faith

PUBLIC FIGURES “should never be afraid to speak of their faith, their beliefs and their values”, Declan Ganley, founder of Libertas, has said.

“We are called to be in this world but not of this world and sadly some in this country have allowed the world and all its transient, earthly desires to detract their focus of love and service.”

Referring to Pope Benedict’s 2004 book, Europe Today and Tomorrow, as “highly recommended” and “required reading”, he said: “Our Holy Father teaches us that once society does not treat every life as precious and inviolable from conception to natural death, then man becomes a product subjected to pragmatism and utilitarianism such that abortion, euthanasia and the destruction of human life are presented as false rights and choice.”

Speaking at the John Paul II Society conference in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, at the weekend, he continued: “Christ calls us to be ambassadors for his message. For too long we have been failing in that duty, apologising for our beliefs in a world which doesn’t want to hear them.

“So let’s take the phrase ‘yes we can’ and recognise that ‘yes we must’. Yes, we must take risks for truth. We must not be suppressed or cowed or embarrassed to stand up for our values, for our families and to show love for one another.”

Recordings of some debates became available yesterday. Keynote speaker at the public conference was Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, author of Render Unto Caesar. Ireland was always seen as a Catholic country but it was one where the church’s influence was “softening”, he said. Though welcomed by some, he felt this was a mistake.

NUI Senator Ronan Mullen said there was “an assumption in some quarters of society today that politics and religion should be kept rigidly separate. But separation is not the same as segregation. Religious belief can never be, theoretically or practically, a solely private affair.”

Fianna Fáil Senator Jim Walsh spoke of his opposition to abortion, stem cell research at UCC, and civil partnership. He thanked Fr Brian McKevitt, editor of the controversial Alive magazine, “for bringing such truths to the Irish people”. A standing ovation for Fr McKevitt followed.
