Libertas to reveal candidates in Rome on 52nd Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome

Call for Pope not to meet Ganley

Libertas is to its reveal candidates in Rome on 25 March, the 52nd Anniversary of the signing Treaty of Rome which established the EEC.

Catholics who oppose Ganley's right wing agenda should write to the Pope Benedict XVI and ask him not to meet Ganley as it would appear to be a political gesture. Ganley has already met Cardinal Stanislaw Dziwisz in Poland and last week at a meeting of the John Paul II Society he stated that he was opposed to abortion and same sex marriage. The US Defence contractor (Rivada) went on "“Christ calls us to be ambassadors for his message"

The pope should not support this US defence contractor in his bid to divide Europe. He may be a practising Catholic but he is one among millions of European Catholics. Organisations like Pax Christi actively campaign for unification and peace what do Libertas stand for? They are supporter by a far right fringe throughout Europe. European Catholics do not want wars.

Ganley is supported by people who wish to wedge a divide between Europe and its neighbours as well as the European neighbours. Libertas seek to woe Catholic voters with their stance on abortion and same sex marriage but their divisive message is not a Catholic message.
See how Libertas wish to use Catholics for their own gains
According to Libertas "
‘‘The speech that Declan gave last week,” said an aide about his remarks to the Catholic groups, ‘‘that might serve him well in the west of Ireland and Poland. But we can’t have candidates saying that sort of thing in the Czech Republic or Sweden."

Say Yes to Peace Say No to Libertas.

"I'm not a Eurosceptic, Innit" Declan Ganley protests his innocence

"I'm not a Eurosceptic, Innit"
Ganley protests his innocence

Declan Ganley can only blame himself if no one believes he is pro-European.Libertas claim to be pro European but their chief political allies are resolutely Eurosceptic. Their supporters/employees post comments on bulletin boards denying their far right supporters while asserting that the Eurosceptics support Libertas because they believe in democracy. Are we to believe that extremists throw a life-line to a "pro EU party" and man like Ganley who would drain away their votes, donations and media exposure despite their diametrically opposite stance on Europe?. Perhaps Viscount Philippe Le Jolis de Villiers de Saintignon of France's MEP is chivalrous as well as being an Islamaphopic Le Penesque poster boy.

No one who interrogates beyond the Libertas rhetoric believes Ganley's scratched record of facile sound-bites. As this blog noted yesterday one of the parties supporting him in Poland "disdains democracy", is right wing monarchist. .
If Libertas had a manifesto prior to their hype it might help people decide. In the meantime all we have to rely as a yard stick for Libertas's true beliefs are Ganley's associates and their stated policies. They are a collection whose scout badges include the badges for homophobia, xenophobia, anti Semiticism, pro-Life in all circumstances regardless of the medical
Why do I get the feeling that when Declan Ganley does issue a manifesto that his odious gang won't desert him?

Irish Times

HARRY McGEE, Political Staff

THE MINISTER for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin yesterday claimed that assertions by Libertas founder Declan Ganley that he is in favour of the European Union have not been borne out by any of his public pronouncements.

Mr Martin contended that Mr Ganley always says that he is a committed European but has done everything he possibly can to undermine it in terms of his statements.

He challenged Mr Ganley’s views that the European Union was run by faceless bureaucrats.

“I mean it is classic stuff. It’s very good in terms of the invisible ‘they’. Who are the ‘they’?

“We have no invisible ‘they’ out there.

“We have public servants in Ireland who are permanently working in Brussels on our behalf. We have a permanent representative, an Ambassador, Bobby McDonagh, who . . . takes instruction from the Irish Government,” he said.

Mr Martin said that government ministers representing all of the 27 states make the policy decisions and are involved in the policy initiatives.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, when he was president of the EU, led the political debate on the issues like the Georgian conflict and helped bring about a ceasefire, Mr Martin said on RTÉ’s Today with Pat Kenny.

Declan Ganley "Christ's Ambassador"?

In the same issue of the Irish Times that features a tale of Ganley trying to silence yet another press outlet that has criticised him Declan Ganley states that "Christ calls us to be ambassadors".
While this blog advocates religious freedom and freedom from persecution the question must be asked........... Is Libertas a holy crusade? Is it a moral crusade? The party has still failed to provide a program or a manifesto. In the meantime we have only Ganley's comments to go on.

Ganley urges public figures over faith

PATSY McGARRY, Religious Affairs Correspondent

PUBLIC FIGURES “should never be afraid to speak of their faith, their beliefs and their values”, Declan Ganley, founder of Libertas, has said.

“We are called to be in this world but not of this world and sadly some in this country have allowed the world and all its transient, earthly desires to detract their focus of love and service.”

Referring to Pope Benedict’s 2004 book, Europe Today and Tomorrow, as “highly recommended” and “required reading”, he said: “Our Holy Father teaches us that once society does not treat every life as precious and inviolable from conception to natural death, then man becomes a product subjected to pragmatism and utilitarianism such that abortion, euthanasia and the destruction of human life are presented as false rights and choice.”

Speaking at the John Paul II Society conference in Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, at the weekend, he continued: “Christ calls us to be ambassadors for his message. For too long we have been failing in that duty, apologising for our beliefs in a world which doesn’t want to hear them.

“So let’s take the phrase ‘yes we can’ and recognise that ‘yes we must’. Yes, we must take risks for truth. We must not be suppressed or cowed or embarrassed to stand up for our values, for our families and to show love for one another.”

Recordings of some debates became available yesterday. Keynote speaker at the public conference was Archbishop Charles Chaput of Denver, author of Render Unto Caesar. Ireland was always seen as a Catholic country but it was one where the church’s influence was “softening”, he said. Though welcomed by some, he felt this was a mistake.

NUI Senator Ronan Mullen said there was “an assumption in some quarters of society today that politics and religion should be kept rigidly separate. But separation is not the same as segregation. Religious belief can never be, theoretically or practically, a solely private affair.”

Fianna Fáil Senator Jim Walsh spoke of his opposition to abortion, stem cell research at UCC, and civil partnership. He thanked Fr Brian McKevitt, editor of the controversial Alive magazine, “for bringing such truths to the Irish people”. A standing ovation for Fr McKevitt followed.

Declan Ganley of Libertas silencing free speech and a free press by issuing spurious threats of legal action?

Declan Ganley likes to talk about openness, democracy & transparency – but
does not always accept a central feature of an open democracy – the right to hold an
opinion that differs from Ganley's own.

Libertas Sister organisation Annual Forum on Public Safety in Europe and North America

Between 2005 and 2007, Ganley’s organisation, Rivada Networks, sponsored the Annual Forum on Public Safety in Europe and North America at my alma mater, the University of Limerick, where Ganley is a director on the University of Limerick Foundation Board. The forum brings together various “policymakers, political and military leaders” to discuss, among other things, “important public safety matters, such as crisis management, interoperability and border security”.
